You have to plug your modem into it for it to be connected to the internet otherwise it has nothing to broadcast.. It doesn't wirelessly receive the Internet connection. You have to already have an Internet connection.

I think you may misunderstand what this device does. This requires a hard line incoming internet connection and then broadcasts a wireless signal. It does not pick up a wireless signal and provide a hard line connection.

I'm not sure I understand. For me, this is a router. The wifi signal comes in through cable, then this is sent via the router through the house.

It works GREAT for me but I am using it attached to a router on a cable extending a strong signal throughout the house whearas before - the wifi signal was weak. Really made a difference in our set-up but as a stand alone not sure. You can always buy and try it since Best Buy has a good return policy.
