The combo modem supports your telephone. The router is for internet and wifi.

You can use this in place of the WiFi from modem but would still have to use the modem for wired telephones. If you were to switch to VOIP as Ooma, Google or Vonage replacing current service then you could use the carriers standard modem and this router for phone calls.

If you are paying a monthly fee for the bundled one, you might save money by turning it it and buying one out right, but then you are responsible for replacing after the warranty runs out. So, you are smart to be asking questions. If you read my review of this model, you will see that it more than meets your needs.
