The speed is determined by what you buy from your Internet Service Provider. The Nighthawk router says it can handle speeds way faster than I am paying Cox to get.

Please try again later.The internet coming into your router has to be gigabyte speed or else you might have within your home two things that could communicate to each other that fast. It won't take a low-end cable or DSL connection and make it go gigabyte between yourself and say other gamers far away. You first have to pay your internet provider for the speed, and then this router will give your computers access to this speed.
