On one part is says its 2-1 modem/router.... why would I need to buy and pair it with another router? null

I'm not sure what you're referencing but the unit that I bought and commented on is the Netgear cm1000 Ultra high-speed cable modem.

In only has one port. If one port is good enough for you, then you would not need a router or a switch. If you need more ports I suggest at least dumb switch. I personally prefer keeping my modem dumb, and program using a router. But that is just me.

I have one but I also have a router I believe it is just a modem because there is no Lan ports in the back of it for direct connecting any devices all modem routers usually have at least three or four Lan ports

It only has a single Ethernet port. If you plug it into just one computer, then that is all you need, but if you have multiple computers, a router, be it Ethernet (hard wired) or WiFi, let’s you connect multiple computers to it.
