EQ is great if you need it when a recording is lacking something, or if it sounds too shrill or what ever. Other than that, you will be best off just bypassing it if the source recording or material is already satisfactory. Any EQ in line will add at least a modicum of distortion, and boosting too much of any of the tones can cause more distortion. I always try to boost as little as possible and only cut some of the frequencies that I want less of to bring the sound into something thta I prefer.
