You can use it without a plan, but for $30/year you can store all of the video clips that the doorbell saves and view them on your phone or Alexa. It's pretty inexpensive for a security device. The $30 covers 2 ring devices so if you get a camera to use somewhere else you can use both on the same plan. If you have more things you can upgrade for more money. Without the plan you get live video, but none of the saved clips (I think).
