The video quality displayed is limited based on what resolutions are available in you broadcast area. My TV does upscale so picture quality is pretty good. If I remember correctly the video resolution is limited to 1080p from the DVR. I have been extremely happy with my purchase of this DVR.

Because it is an OTA (over the air) device to be used with antennae and not cable, your picture quality will be at the level of your signal being received. If streaming from other services like Netflix or Amazon Prime and view in 4k, you would have to pick a show that is in 4k format. I love this TIVO since I cut cable. I still have the ability to record all my favorite shows, it has a TV guide built in, searches across other platforms (Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hula) to find the shows you want, and makes recommendations you might like based in your viewing preferences. With this device you pay a little more upfront but then you don't have to pay the monthly service fee.
