I purchased this unit 1 week ago so my review is limited to setup and initial use. Unlike several other reviewers, I had absolutely no difficulty with the initial setup. Once started the system would pull down updates from the TiVo server, apply them, re-boot, and then begin the next phase. The total process took approximately 45 minutes. Once completed the internal guide had 24 hours of information loaded into it with the balance of the 2 weeks loading over the next several hours. My only complaint is around the manual that accompanies the device. It is the bare minimum and deals only with set-up. The actual use guide (named "TiVo Experience Viewers Guide") must be downloaded from the TiVo site. It is fairly well written and provides instruction on the total operation of the device. Overall - I am pleased with my purchase at this point.

Great DVR But Voice Control Is Iffy

If you're buying this model for voice control, be prepared for some disappointment. Voice control with the remote works most of the time, but sometimes I get an error telling me the app isn't available and I should try again later. Controlling it with Alexa is pretty much a waste of time. It simply takes too long to speak the command and then wait for her to carry it out. And that's when it actually works. Sometimes she'll tell me she can't do something or she'll do the wrong thing. I can get her to pause the TiVo, but I can't get her to resume playing no matter what I say. The voice remote is much faster. I upgraded from a TiVo HD XL, so the onscreen menu is a big improvement over what I had before. It has 2 more tuners than my old unit, yet the whole box is much smaller. And it's awesome that product lifetime service is included with the Roamio OTA VOX 1TB.

I had the cable with the DVR and decided to cancel it all because it was so expensive. I splurged and bought this TiVo and haven’t looked back. I installed an attic antenna and hooked it into my existing trails of coax cable. Although the TiVo’s a bit pricey up front, it pays for its self very quickly in the long run. There is no extra, monthly fees either!! It took me a little to figure out how to navigate it, but I got the hang of it now. There is one little problem that I have with it though... I also decided to stream with live Hulu to receive the needed sports channels. Knowing that it was Hulu friendly it seemed like a perfect match. But, I soon realized that the Hulu that you use on it’s apps does not support Hulu Live, just the regular on demand edition. So, I have to use my Fire Tv to access that, which is no big deal. But I still watch my Netflix and Amazon Prime thru the TiVo with no problem, cause it’s easy to access without having to switch my TV input.

Lifetime TiVo Subscription with no cable costs

With so much information coming from the internet these days cutting my cable cord (and high bill) was a no-brainer. This TiVo comes with a lifetime subscription to TiVo service, so no more pesky monthly bills, and it also has a 1TB hard drive to record plenty of network TV, and my wife' beloved soap opera. With the digital antenna hooked up we get the 4 major networks (which is really all we need), and we get some bonus extra channels in my area, about 20 stations we may actually sit and watch, and a few more that we really don't. Still a great value with the big cable companies rising prices and low customer care I had to pull the trigger but it is well worth it in the long run.

Upgraded after disk died in TiVo Premiere XL and this model has been working out great: I like the improved UI, ability to jump to an online service with one programmed number key, skip button, easier access to complete episode lists and link to online services to play. The YouTube app works, where on previous box it could not play videos without interruptions. I've found switching from menus back to live tv is cleaner and faster than previously (though that might have been due to video settings on previous box). Also so the RF remote feature is a big help: the previous IR remote was very limited in angle in my experience and so would not work from some of the places I watch from. One thing to watch out for is that it took a long time to finish setting up, during which it appeared to be ready (except for guide) yet would just not display whole pages for settings. If you wait long enough (> minutes, more like hours) then it does finish and everything is great.

Love it for it's interface, guide, and recording OTA programs. Wish you could add your own apps (not just preinstalled ones) and wish it could stream recordings to other devices.

Premium price but not permium features

With a choice of 4 DVR's for OTA recording and Best Buy carrying 3 of them, TIVO is the most expensive. While arguably the leader in the category, you expect to pay a premium for the Tivo but also expect top of the line services, however that is where it fails with glaring omissions. Many have noted how convoluted the initial setup is, and they are correct, but I did get through it with only one call to Tivo. The remote has two issues 1) never pairing with my Sony TV - both learning mode and manual code input, but perhaps worse, the number pad fails to have a decimal point so there is no way to go directly to 2.1 to 24.3. You have to bring up the guide and walk it down. No favorite channels list on the Tivo, and when attempted to put them in a Harmony remote, wouldn't accept decimal channels like it would with some of my other devices or straight antenna hookup to the TV. The other issue is programming. It uses a proprietary system that they have not updated. While it had the expected basics - Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, HBO etc, totally missing were the cable substitutes - Sling, PlayStation Vue, and Direct TV Now, essentially requiring a different device, such as Roku, Amazon Fire, Apple TV be plugged into a different input to receive those cable substitute services. Really expect more from Tivo. Returning it and going to try a different device.

I’ve had TiVo for 14 years and currently use three of these OTA Roamios. I don’t have cable and found my old rooftop antenna picks up all the local HD stations just fine. Don’t believe the marketers who try to sell you an “HD antenna”. Rabbit ears will do the same thing. This TiVo has a great user interface for searching and storing your shows, and the ease of connection to streaming services is nice. The OneSearch function is great- especially since I use multiple streaming services and don’t always know which one has that show everyone is talking about, or where to find an old movie.

The free guide for this TiVO is worth the purchase price. No monthly charge at all. This dvr is everything it is marketed to be. As easy as the cable company dvr was but so many more features. The commercial skip works perfectly. Easy to record future episodes of all my favorite network shows. Can record 4 shows at one time. Hope this dvr lasts many years to come. Worth every dollar!

Got tired of DISH rates going up due to the price of local channels, and realized we mainly were watching these local channels which we could receive by our antenna. TIVO allows us to still pause and record our shows, and it is easy to use. Still need a Tivo mini to use on a 2nd TV. The mini requires an Ethernet cable run between the boxes. Wish this worked wirelessly as the main box is a wireless hookup. Overall we’re happy with this product, and like that there is no monthly subscription.

Takes a bit to get used to after dealing with dish for years, but well worth the investment. With four tuners I can record everything that I want. Picture and sound quality is great. Planning on buying a mini for the bedroom. Not going back to satellite ever. Thank you TiVo.

When my cable bill approached $120 per month, I was ready to cancel services. TiVo turned out to be an excellent choice. This particular model includes updated tv schedules and no monthly fee. It costs more initially than the other TiVo model with a monthly subscription, but at $15 per month This model will be the more economical buy in less than a year. I expect it to last at least two years when I will replace it with a new 4K version of this machine. Buyers should note that apps for Hulu and Netflix are available, but I prefer to use Apple TV and Amazon Fire instead. If the apps were better I would give it five stars.

Best OTA DVR for cord cutters

Have used TiVo products for about 10 years owning a number of them. In my opinion TiVo, while not perfect, is still the best DVR available. If you want to replace cable or satellite with an Over The Air antenna and maybe supplement that with a couple of streaming options such as Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime the TiVo will make your TV experience a great one while saving hundreds annually. That said Amazon’s new Fire TV and Recast DVR combo is also worth looking at. Especially nice if you want to have all of your TV including OTA channels and cable replacement streaming services like Sling, Hulu w/live TV, YouTube TV, DirecTV Now, etc. all accesed via the Fire TV interface and Fire TV remote.

After making a huge mistake trying a Tablo device, I tried this little jewel - so glad I did. This TiVo device was much easier to install. The phone tech support is light years better. And this device just offers more overall. If you’re looking to cut the cable cord, this is a great option. TiVo already has several apps already loaded - Prime Video, Netflix, Hulu, etc. The entry price is higher than some, but you are also free of monthly subscription fees. Spend a few more bucks for a good attic HDTV antenna, hook to it and you’ll be happy.

So far I am really liking the TIVO system. We had been using the DVR on a Windows 7 computer but with recent upgrades Windows is no longer supporting it. The TIVO system is way better than Windows Media Center. I really like the ease of use to set up recording using the ap. Whether I am at home or away it works very well. My only issue is with the remote. It has so many buttons. I have not figured out how to use it in the dark. I'm sure I will get there.

It definitely does what it says. My main reason for purchasing the Tivo was to record my favorite shows. I am able to do that but I am not impressed with the quality and resolution. I think improvements need to be made. Also too expensive for the product.

The installation was a bit frustrating, even with some technical support, but once it worked, I was getting a really good picture, especially on the local stations with HD signals. Some stations were coming even better than what I was getting with my local station on Dish TV. Now it's working as expected.

I purchased the TiVo Roamio OTA 1 TB about 2 months ago. We cut cable 2 years ago and the TiVo Roamio DVR makes it feel like we’ve got Direct TV all over again. The best features are the TV guide, voice command and the ability to record anything you want. It frees you up from being on a networks schedule. Record and catch up anytime you like. This was exactly what I was looking for. AND there is NO on going fees.

We do like our Tivo. I read reviews, and took time to decide on this box, it had good reviews. Tech support was great for normal operating features, but when I contacted them with a problem with audio on the apps wks ago they have still not replied (note that they say they will contact us within 48 hrs). Basically you can hear sound on the apps but not dolby surround sound. You have to turn off the dolby sound to get any sound on the apps. They didn't tell us this, we figured it out... they told us it was a faulty box (which didn't inspire us since the first one ordered was DOA from the package.) Like I said, not great tech support for real issues. But the jump through commercials on recordings is awesome! Setting up recordings was easy, after having it only a day I wondered why we didn't cut the cord years ago, we'd have saved much more money. We are happy, but if the sound issue was corrected we'd be over the moon...
