A: The 500Gb and 1Tb versions work with an antenna. Do not buy the 3Tb (6 tuner) version as it only works on a cable service
Q: Will this stream to firetv to watch on a second tv or is there additional hardware needed?
A: Yes........Not anymore..........maybe again in the future. 1st, there is no streaming device built into the OTA. You needed a "Tivo Stream" box attached to your network to make it stream. As far as I know, they no longer sell the "stream" box. 2nd There was a beta app that was available and as of Nov 2017 taken out of service. Now, it is my understanding that an app is in the works that will allow you to access your content through a web browser. We will have to wait and see on that one. For now, with my "stream" box attached to my network, I am able to watch the content from my DVR on my Ipad and android tablets and cell phones. These are all app based BTW. You only other option will be to buy their Tivo Mini to watch your DVR content on another TV in the house. Hope things change soon!
Q: how much is the service fee?
A: The Tivo Roamio from Best Buy includes the channel service fee from Tivo with purchase. I only had to type in the number from the back of the Tivo and provide my zip code. Once the Tivo was plugged in and set up to the internet via wifi it downloaded the local TV Guide for my zip code.
Q: How can I get it to work with cable? If It can't work with cable, I can't use it.
A: This is an OTA version, so only for over the air, not cable.
A: After a few weeks of use, I first found I could SKIP through the most recent episode of "Blue Bloods" commercials. The feature is only available IF the producers of the broadcast want you to have it, and the "Blue Bloods" episode is from the newest season on CBS, so we have to thank them and we need to ask others to support it. It worked great, perfect edit.
Q: Did I understand that it will record 4 shows at once
A: That's right. 4 shows at once. Really enjoy ours. Picture quality is great and remote is the best around.
A: I believe that the storage format is proprietary and not accessible by either direct network connection or taking the drive out (which might void your warranty). In fact, the Tivo manual says that if you add storage via the USB port (only Tivo approved devices, the manual says, will work) and then remove that storage at a later date, you may lose recordings on both internal and external storage. However, it is possible to move stored programs across a network by installing TivoDesktop2.8.2.exe on a Windows (I think XP or later) computer connected to the same network; this will allow you to view transferred video files in Windows Media Player or VLC Media Player (VLC Media Player is freeware readily available on the internet). Tivo, I believe, no longer maintains TivoDesktop, so you will have to find it on an internet search. You are on your own as far as any copyright issues are concerned. I am sure Tivo would be pleased if you bought Tivo Mini, which allows you to view videos stored on your Tivo Roamio when both are connected on the same wired network. Tivos have wireless capacity, but they won't talk to each other over a wireless network. If you don't have a wired network in your home, look into powerline ethernet (you will still need some kind of router, unless you are willing to experiment with an ad-hoc network).
Q: Does this come with a life time subscription ?
A: Yes, it comes with lifetime subscription. You go through a process of signing up but it costs $0.
