Tivo Roamio is a great deal

I bought a TIVO Roamio at my local Best Buy the day my Cable bill jumped to $90. I had done a little online research and decided Tivo was the best over the air solution. I plugged it in, followed the directions, and was watching 26 local channels in no time. I was even able to ditch my Roku as the Roamio has Netflix, Hulu, and Youtube built in. No more cable bill and we don't really miss the cable only stuff. I just schedule my shows and watch them when I have time. The green skip button allows me to skip the commercials. Have interacted with Tivo support a few times as I added a stream device and Tivo Minis and never had a problem. I also bought a Tivo Bolt on a Best Buy sale and I prefer the Roamio for no monthly charges, interface, and that I was able to very easily upgrade the hard drive to 3 TB. Would highly recommend a Tivo Roamio to anyone who doesn't like monthly TV charges.

Don’t know if it is easy to use or if it does a good job, as it stopped working the morning after it was installed.

Very Good DVR, it has 4 Tuners so you can record multiple shows at a time, while watching one, If you don't have a smart tv it also give you access to many different apps and has 1TB of storage most are under 1TB or more expensive for 2TB

Day 1 review

Hookup was straight forward, ethernet cable was used for the internet connection, HDMI to the TV. A splitter was added to the antenna cable so that it went to both the TV and the Tivo to test for differences in reception, plus the ability to operate the TV independently.
After power on, there was a setup routine to go through that included a software upgrade and a reboot. After that, I experimented with the menus and settings, then setup the Tivo's remote control to power off/on the TV and run the volume on the soundbar. Some of the more obscure stuff like a channels SNR (Signal/Noise Ratio) took some menu surfing to find, but overall it's a pretty good user interface, and there wasn't any problems with the hardware or software.
Despite the inherent signal loss from the coax splitter, both the TV and Tivo received all the channels from 27 miles away (antenna in attic), and the SNR stayed the same for all channels (25-35 Db) on both devices.
Setting up for recording recurring programs and a movie using the Tivo Guide were very quick. This, plus the ability to automatically delete older recordings are the main "likes".

Extreme disappointment

Words cannot express how unhappy I have been with this purchase and especially with the customer service. We thought this would be a good option when cutting the cord. We wanted to maintain a channel guide, as well as be able to record live TV. We have a roof top antenna that works well on our TVs. When we have tried to record with the TiVo Romeo, the signal is so poor that only about 1/2 of our recordings are viable. Apparently, the TiVo splits the signal and reduces quality when recording. Additionally, the customer service is an absolute joke. The first several people said I needed to buy a signal booster. One guy directed me to one on Amazon, and when I received it, the product I got was actually something to REDUCE signal. I finally found a signal booster and that didn't help at all. I called customer service several times, and each time was told what I was doing wrong by agents with a decent grasp of most of the English language. One particularly frustrating agent used "definitely" when she meant "probably" or "should" for the entire conversation. The final straw for my first box was when the channel lineup could no longer be programmed. I wound up sending in the box, remote, and power cord and waited for my replacement. I received a box back. No power cord. I called and told them I just got the box and needed the cord, too. I totally missed that I also needed the remote. So I called back the next day to get a remote as well. I have no clue if this new box is going to work because I can't test it out until I get the required pieces to operate it. The estimate on that is five days. So sometime in the middle of next week, I might be able to see if the replacement works any better than the original.
I am frustrated and irritated with this product. If I could go back in time and NOT purchase it, I would. Unfortunately I have dicked around with customer service trying to fix these issues for so long that I am out of the return window. Terrible purchase. Would not recommend.

Died after 7 months

I bought this to replace my old TIVO that I had for 10 years before it died. The Roamio OTO was a great upgrade over the old Premeire model, but much to my dismay yesterday it quit working. I rebooted it and then it worked. Today I turned on my TV & the TIVO started with an awful grinding sound. Tried rebooting again - still grinds. Not covered by them even though this appears to be a frequent issue with other customers. I’d be better off with cable at this rate buying a new one twice a year. I cannot recommend it. Not sure what to do at this point.

TiVo customer service is useless

Thinking that the TiVo Roamio would be the solution to cutting the cord, I planned to use an indoor antenna, Hulu, Netflix & HBO with the TiVo to satisfy my tv needs. Customer Service was unable to help when the Hulu app would not load and they also refused to answer HBOGo vs HBONow questions saying that was not their job even though HBO is one of the apps provided. They promised to send email in 7-10 days with response to Hulu load issues - 10 days really? I am still waiting for that email 2 weeks later. I was never able to load Hulu. The TiVo was a huge disappointment - I am back to square 1 trying to choose between the lesser of 2 evils for tv service: AT&T or Comcast. TiVo has been returned to Best Buy. Sigh.

Unreliable

DO NOT RELY ON THIS MACHINE TO RECORD YOUR PROGRAMS! I bought the Roamio to cut the cable and record OTA programs. On more than one occasion the machine did not record what I programmed and I verified that the programmed was scheduled.
I am on my second Roamio as the first one developed a high pitched whine. I had to return it to Tivo as Best Buy would not accept the return. Now the second box doesn't record and Tivo won't refund my purchase because I did not purchase it directly from them.
Technical support tried to blame it on antenna strength but I have a strong signal and the machine has recorded other programs on the same channel.
If you still want to buy a TiVo, buy it from TiVo for a better chance at returning it.

TIVO is a Dinosaur

I have been a satisfied TIVO customer from the beginning but I have just junked my 3 DVR's and two Minis. They have become useless to me because after many hours of effort dealing with 3 support organizations no one can resolve the problem. I have also found the X1 user interface to be far superior. I predict bankruptcy in less than 5 years.

Doesn't really come with detailed instructions on activating. Have to call in and cannot activate on line for first users. Haven't been able to get it working for finding the zip code for programming in Fort Myers. Customer Service closes 6pm PST. Seems like alot of people with same problem on-line. Frustrating to Setup.
