I have an Apple TV that is plugged in directly to the TVs HDMI input. I also have a surround system connected to the TV using an optical cable. Any device plugged into the TV including my Apple TV will play through the surround sound. Hope this helps.

Hook these optical audio cables from apple tv to surround sound optical audio input. Set receiver to accept sound through optical audio input. Picture should go directly to tv through the input number you selected and sound should go through receiver to your speakers.
