Yes, the button on the handle has three different positions; hard wood, short carpet, and long carpet. The hard wood floor option turns off the brushes and lowers the head. Move the button up even one slot, it will turn on brushes and lift head.

On the handle of the Shark® Rotator® Powered Lift-Away® XL Upright Vacuum you can switch the flooring type you want the vacuum to work on. This vacuum has three flooring settings. All the way forward is for bare floors, the middle setting is for carpet, and all the way back is for deep carpet. Hang on tight when you activate on of the carpet settings—it’ll drag you!
