There is a hook that holds it in place and seems to quite secure.

No lock just lift on right side with some pressure. Will not brake.

Thanks for the question. The shelf I believe you're referring to doesn't actually lift up, but rather the front half of it retracts by lifting slightly then pushing back so it overlaps the rear half of the shelf. I hope this helps to clarify how this extra-space shelf works. - Ms. Samsung
