• SmoothSkin devices can be used safely on Fitzpatrick skintones 1-5. IPL is not suitable to treat Fitzpatrick skin tone 6. This is all down to the way in which the technology itself works. IPL is not suitable for dark skin because it contains high amounts of melanin. High levels of melanin in the skin can compete with that in the hair shaft. This can potentially injure the skin. All SmoothSkin devices are fitted with sensors to ensure that they do not fire on unsuitable skin tones.
