“I have several Sonos devices that i have had for many years. So by definition I have to use the S1 version of the Sonos controller. Will the move work with the S1 version of controller/App/devices.”

Yes! I have the same situation and the Move works fine with Sonos S1.

Thank you for being a long-time Sonos customer. The short answer is the Sonos Move can work with the S1 software. The longer answer is that not all "old" products are S1 only. The products that are S1 only are: ZP100, ZP80, ZP120, ZP90, Connect & Connect:Amp (made before 2015), Play:5 Gen 1, ZPS5, CR200, and BR100) . If your system does not include one of these you can upgrade to S2. This website has more details around the software change and its compatibility.
