Unfortunately, this is a possibility when dealing with physical pre-order bonuses. However, any digital pre-order content is always included with new versions of the game when purchased early. Physical rewards (such as the aforementioned Smash Bros coin) are typically gimmicky and not at all worth it. So you may not be able to get it with a digital copy, which is unfortunate if you do really want the item, but know that you're really not missing much at all.
