This lock has no sensor to sense if the door is closed or ajar. If you prop the door open while the deadbolt is withdrawn, the deadbolt will extend automatically after your selected auto-close timeout period, regardless of whether the door is closed or ajar.

Yes. Much like a normal deadbolt, if the physical deadbolt is not aligned with the strike plate, and the deadbolt is set while the door is open or ajar, the deadbolt will need to be retracted. The door should be shut before the deadbolt can be set.
