“I watched a youtube video that said if you record your clips to an SD card then you can only watch them back when you are back home connected to the same network as the camera. Is that true? So if I'm on vacation I won't get alerts and can't view them?”

Hi! No, you can view and manage the camera remotely, and receive notifications, as long as the camera and your smartphone have Internet connectivity. You can view recorded clips that are stored on the Micro SD card remotely, as well.
