• Yes you can. It's pretty simple to install. It doesn't come with encryption so I would go to the manufacturer's website and download it.

• Depends on how you want the backup your son's HP. Just copying files over it works fine. if you want to use the backup program I haven't used that. It's just usually easier to drag and drop everything and tell to copy over everything and just let it run for an hour. Currently doing that with two terabytes of data not a problem

• The drive is formatted as NTFS out of the box, so you should have no problem connecting it to your son's computer and transferring files.
