I would have to say PMR, since I didn't see anything in the packaging to indicate that it was shingled.

Pmr is nice and convienant, not sure about smr. If u looking for portable, this hdd is portable and it nice that u dont have to have a power cord to plug it in and power it up. This hdd requires only a usb cable (the one that came with it and made for this hdd only). Whatever your preference is, go with it.
