I am thinking you may need to format the drive or ensure your Blu ray player is compatible with the type of file system (fat32 or ntfs) in use with the Hdd.

Were those drives USB 3.0? If not, then that may be the reason.

Most likely you need to format the drive on a pc if the blue ray player supports external drives

Being the cheapest in the line of usb storage those devices may not recognize it. 
Try a higher model that’s built for holding blu Ray data, game data etc
