It can be but from what I've read and learned it isn't recommended. It draws power from the device its connected to and that tends to make the drives more sensitive to usage. I'd recommend a powered drive if you need it on 24/7

It is powered by your laptop or desktop so I would think there would be no problem. I have three of them so I confident they will work for long periods of time. Wish I could give a better answer.

To run it 24-7, I would expect its life expectancy to be less...I've run these for 8-12 hours a day for maybe a month at a time (with sensitive data on there) for years. If its stuff you can live without or have another back up sure why not? Usually, I would purchase an external hard drive connected to a power source if you're going to run it 24-7
