“I’m not very tech savy. I’m looking for an external storage unit so I can store all my dvd/Blu-ray,music on and play back on my tv. I’m not sure how this process takes place. Can I use my laptop? Do I need to use my laptop for playback every time?”

Your TV would need to have a USB port. Then plug in external hard drive into USB port. Use the TV to browse and play the files. You could also use a Xbox or something like that.
