It comes preformated in NTFS. You can reformat it using the OS disk utilities or the Western Digital utilities that are installed not he drive.

I recommend NTFS if you only use Windows computers, since it can accommodate large files, but if you share with a MAC or Linux you might want to use FAT32 or exFAT.
