Yes, this will go into sleep mode if not active.  No, the sleep mode if not configurable.

It will stay on with your computer. You can disable with advanced use of your OS.

No. It's powered as long as it's plugged in and computer is running. It will go into a standby type mode if you close laptop or put of in standby.

From what I’ve seen, it pulls power via USB. So if whatever it’s connected to is not on, then the hard drive isn’t running.

It got warm while workig doing backups then it was cooler in the morning so I guess it automatically adjusts to workload while staying active
