No...you would need an operating system on the external drive

Please try again later.In my opinion, there is a possibility that you may be able to set this drive up as a "mirror" drive; however, to do this would likely take some specialized software and system knowledge. I do not think I could do it. This is a simple USB Drive - with a ton of capacity. Without some type of specialized driver, this drive looks to your computer just like an ordinary drive. To my understanding, this drive cannot be set up as a RAID type drive, which may allow you to do what you are asking to do. There is a possibility that you may find some type of external RAID Driver and hardware that can do this, but you would be defeating the whole point of portability. If you want drive redundancy, I suggest you explore RAID type systems and purchase a computer or motherboard that has RAID capabilities. (Note: "RAID" - Redundant Array of Independent Disks. There are several different versions some of which require several independent disk drives. Look it up.)

If you are using Carbon Copy Cloner (macOS), for example, then yes, you will pick up right where you did your last backup. If you are using Time Machine, you will have to restore from the last Time Machine backup, so you may miss an hour or so of data, and it will take some time for the restore process, of course.
