Customers are saying

Customers appreciate the AirPort Extreme Base Station's ease of use, range, and performance. Many also highlight the strong signal strength and relatively easy setup process, resulting in great coverage. However, some customers find the price to be a bit high. A few also mention that the size could be smaller and that more Ethernet ports would be beneficial.

    Best Wifi router

This router is great. It can manage having the whole family being connected at once without problems. Also, I love being able to keep my devices backed up using an external hard drive that can be connected to the AirPort.

Good when working. Kept losing power.

I bought this router believing that it would be more reliable than other brands seeing that it is an Apple product. The device is very easy to setup. However, after a few hours the router shut off. No lights on or blinking just nothing. The router continuously seemed to lose power every few hours. I exchanged the item thinking I got a bad one but the other one did the same thing. The router just seemed to turn off or lose power. I returned the second router and picked up the Netgear Nighthawk. This router seems to work fine so far. Distance wise the routers are similar but the Netgear has better performance at far distances. Overall, the Apple device is small and compact and performs nicely when working but for me it was very unreliable.

We were having issues with our internet in our home reaching the far ends of the house and speeds were horrible. Now with this we can go anywhere in our 1100 sf house and connect to WiFi Great product as always Apple.

Replaced an old airport that I dropped moving. It was very easy to set-up using the app on my phone. It was very easy to name the network the same as my old network name and password so that I didn't have to redo on all of my devices!

Replaced my NetGear with the AirPort Extreme and couldn't be happier. Set up was very simple and I got stronger signal with better speeds. The price seems steep until you realize just how much better of a device it is.

Excellent device, pricey, requires OSX or iOS

The Airport Extreme has been the best quality home networking device for some time. They cost more, but what you get in range, and longevity make the price well worth it. The only reason this device does not get 5 stars is because Apple stopped making the Airport configuration software for Windows, which means you must own an OSX or iOS device to be able to configure this device.

This is a great router but unfortunately Apple is no longer going to make it. I hope they end up replacing it with something better. It works great with all Apple products.

I Like Apple Products, But Not All Are Great

    Posted .

I do like Apple products, but why do they all have high ratings? These routers are not that great. I wanted to give one a shot. I actually bought this and a Time Capsule and created an extended network by connecting them together via Ethernet cable. The devices were fairly easy to set up, but I did have the AirPort Extreme crash every time I tried to rename it. So I had to leave it with the default name. Wi-fi performance was lacking, and Netflix and HBO Go would often buffer while watching. I'm an IT Pro and the lack of proper management tools doesn't really do it for me. I can see how this would be good for someone who doesn't push the limits of their networking and doesn't care about configs. This router just didn't light up my world. I went back to my Asus Router and have had zero issues. This product is def. not for everyone.

    Most reliable AC router available!

This is my 3rd attempt at an AC router. Tried both the Linksys AC1900 and Netgear R7000 routers which were rma'd after losing connections time after time and faulty firmware. This is the most stable router I have ever used and I get 4 bar connections throughout my house. What a relief after having to reboot my previous routers almost daily. Don't fret if you have no other Apple products. Works great in Windows.

Bought this to create my own WiFI net at college instead of sharing with 10000 others. Gives me safety from outside cuz only I have the password. Increases my speed.

Great upgrade to my wireless connection

    Posted .

The new AC version Airport Extreme made a measurable jump in my wireless speeds, doubling the speed I have on my Macbook Air, even though it is a 2012 model, and does not have the 802.11 AC antenna built in, just the N speed. I used multiple tests at speediest.net before and after replacing the prior gen Airport Extreme, and saw a doubling in my download speeds. Uploads were not significantly changed. I tested using several host sites as well, and the download speeds were very similar for each test. We have several computers, an iPad, an iPhone, an airport express, and an apple TV all connected to it.

Not a good fit for my two story home (poor range)

I was a previous owner of the airport extreme 802.11n and I decided to upgrade to the latest 802.11ac version to take advantage of faster wifi speeds and extended range. The setup of this airport extreme was easy using the airport utility. Within minutes I was up and running. The result, I was very disappointed with the range and the wifi speed. I located the airport extreme base station in a centralized location on the second floor of my house and I was unable to receive full strength of the wifi 5GHz frequency in my family room downstairs. Using the speed test app on my iphone, I was consistently clocking around 44.95mbps download and 23.42 mbps upload. I decided to use my old airport extreme as an extension to my network but was unable to achieve any faster speeds. I ended up returning the airport extreme base station and purchased the "NETGEAR - Nighthawk DST AC1900 Wireless-AC Gigabit Router with DST Adapter". While I paid a little more, I was extremely happy with the results. Using the NETGEAR router with the DST Adapter, placed in the same location that I had the airport extreme base station, I was able to achieve a strong 5GHz signal in my downstairs family room and I consistently clocked around 136.54mbps download and 23.67mbps upload. At one point I clocked 171.46mbps download and 23.70mbps upload. Not bad for wifi speeds. While the airport extreme was easy to setup and it looks good, it was not a good fit for my two story home.
