Buying a Wireless Access Point

How Does a Wireless Access Point Differ from a Router?

Having a dependable internet connection at home is important to most of us. Many of our daily activities, from enjoying music and streaming entertainment to taking care of work and school responsibilities, rely on Wi-Fi, which we often associate with our wireless router. Wireless access points (WAPs) are different from (and less talked about) than routers, but they can play an important role in keeping your entire home connected. A WAP can give you a secondary wireless access hub to connect computers, tablets, smart speakers and other devices that may not always be close to your main router. For a high level of reliability, you can use ethernet cables to hardwire your WAP to your home or business router or your network switch.

Getting the Most from Your Wireless Access Point

Every home and business network is different. There may be any combination or number of different devices, different kinds of users and different numbers of users at different times. Wireless access points (WAPs) can offer a bigger benefit to networks in larger homes and businesses. A wireless access point hub can make it easy to provide Wi-Fi access for numerous laptops or desktop computers. Like anyone else with their own network, WAP users should understand their security vulnerabilities and strengths. You can fend off malware and phishing attacks by adding internet security software to computers on your WAP network. You can also use hardware meant to help keep hackers and other problems away from your home or business.
