Best computer at this price. Did Apple mess up?

Apple products are usually priced well above their counterparts equivalent product. Now…I never run my computers super hard but using this thing for music production has been amazing. Using an audio interface to record guitar, bass, drums, vocals…everything works so well. Especially when using a VST for electronic drums. Basically zero lag without any modifications to drivers or sample sizes. If you want a Mac desktop. This thing is half the size of a laptop. Barely uses any energy and is whisper quiet.

The Mac mini has completely exceeded my expectations. It’s lightning fast, handles multiple pro-level apps effortlessly, and stays almost completely silent even under load. I use it for development, automation, and virtualization, it hasn’t stuttered once. The compact size is perfect for a clean, minimalist workspace, and macOS runs buttery smooth on this hardware. Whether you’re coding, editing, or just want a future-proof desktop, this thing delivers. Total powerhouse in a tiny shell.

Windows User buys a Mac Mini

I am a long-time Windows user. I don't plan to switch over completely to Apple products, but after hearing good things about Apple Silicon, I wanted to try out this unit. It works well, a powerful computer in a small package. I have used it for making video files, and it does the job. The only complaint I have is that upgrading from the base model is so expensive. I think Apple would sell many more of these if they made upgrades cheaper, or made it easier for users to upgrade the memory and storage of these machines as the need arises. I bought a dock for this that gives me many more USB ports, as well as external SSD storage.

As an owner of the 2018 Mac mini i5, I wanted to upgrade to Apple's new technology. The Mac mini M4 is very small. See the picture showing the size difference. Not all software has been compiled to run natively on the M4 RISC processor. But, the mini is super fast and interpreting doesn't slow it down. A reboot takes about 2 seconds. I'm glad I got it, I like the thing. If I were to do it again, I'd get the top of the line (i.e. most cores, most RAM.) If you don't already have something like this, the Insignia 7-Port USB-C Hub is recommended to purchase with this M4 Mac mini.

I needed a new desktop Mac because I decided I didn't want to deal with Windows anymore. While needing to get a Mac-compatible keyboard added a bit to the cost, for what you're getting, the Mac mini is an astounding value. This thing just breezes through everyday computing tasks. Apps launch near-instantaneously, and there's no worries about constant nagging to use "recommended" features. It's a computer that just works and looks gorgeous while doing so. There's only one real complaint on my part, and it's that the device's only headphone jack is on the front, which means the cord for my desktop speakers is always jutting out of the front of the machine.

What a difference Apple Silicon makes!

Have been using Intel Macs, but have been disappointed with the fan noise that fires up any time some sort of non-idle tasks is occurring. Was amazed at the responsiveness of this lowest-end Mac Mini compared to the 2019 core i7 Mac Mini and 2019 core i9 MacBook Pro we have in our house. This 2024 Mac Mini completely beats the pants off of those other machines, and I have never heard it spin up a fan, even under some reasonably computationally heavy tasks like doing AI model audio transcriptions or installing other operating systems in a virtual machine. Only drawback is that there are a precious few other operating systems that can be installed on this Apple Silicon Mac. But the ones that do install, run exceptionally well, even as virtual machines. I am a pretty picky personal computer user, and I have to say that if this kind of performance is what you get on the low-end of the Apple line, then I am very pleased to see the progress they have made with personal computing technology over the past 5 years.

    Cute box does it all

Exceeded expectations This little box punches way above its weight. For the MSRP, it outperforms a lot of machines thanks to the ridiculously powerful M4 chip and unified memory. Logic Pro’s 76-track fully layered demo loads in about 3 seconds and plays flawlessly; No hiccups, no drama. Meanwhile, my gaming PC (i7-14700K / 32GB RAM / RTX 4080) starts complaining, stuttering, and throwing a tantrum at around 26 tracks, and it gets worse every 10 tracks after that. ASIO feels ancient and… honestly, kind of sad. MainStage loads instantly, and the low-latency guitar feel is unlike anything I’ve experienced on Windows. Even with Axe I/O drivers set to a very low 64 samples, Windows can’t touch this. Ever tried running YouTube and your DAW at the same time on Windows? Exclusive audio drivers block playback, or you’re stuck fighting brutal latency. Core Audio absolutely destroys Windows here. Bonus surprises To my surprise, it also handles retro emulation like a champ. PS2 and PS3 games run at 4K/60fps without breaking a sweat, and even many Switch titles run well. For modern games, I tested Resident Evil Biohazard and got performance comparable to a PS4; Not bad at all. This isn’t a gaming machine (my PC still handles that duty), but it’s a fantastic temporary workhorse. Long-term plan For now, it’s my DAW and daily computer. Later, it’ll retire gracefully into permanent NAS and retro-gaming duty. Not bad for a “stop-gap.” Value I snagged this during a massive sale for $399. Micro Center had the deal, and Best Buy matched it online; Even though it was out of stock, which they normally don’t do. Big props to them. This cute little box won’t replace a high-end gaming rig or a maxed-out workstation, but it truly is the little engine that could. It’ll get most people surprisingly far, and I’d 100% recommend it.

The Mac mini M4 (16GB RAM, 256GB SSD) is incredibly fast and completely silent. I was honestly surprised by the performance—everyday tasks, multitasking, and development work feel instant and effortless. What really stood out is AI performance. I ran LLMs locally for AI training and inference, and in my workloads it actually outperformed a system with an NVIDIA 4080 GPU. The performance-per-watt is unreal for a machine this small. The 256GB SSD is very fast but realistically only enough for basic use and core apps. For anything beyond that, cloud storage or an external SSD is a must.

    Puts older iMac to shame!

This Mac mini replaces an aged iMac and I am more than thrilled with the improved performance of this device. Not only is the processor much faster than the iMac, but its reduced size is a real benefit on my crowded desk. I use it for photo editing, and combined with an SS monitor I couldn’t be happier with the quality.

The Apple 2024 Mac mini Desktop Computer with M4 Pro is an excellent little powerhouse. The price was really good for the performance you get, and it runs incredibly smooth and fast. Amazing product. Super fast, super small, and super cheap. There’s a ton of aftermarket attachments you can add to add more ports or ssd space. I’ve been super happy after switching from a laptop to the Mac Mini with a 27” Lg screen that was pretty cheap. Full setup cost around 1,000. Pretty much bare minimum for any decent setup.

The new Mac Mini M4 is a fantastic addition to any workstation. Its compact and portable design makes it incredibly convenient, yet it packs enough power to handle demanding tasks like video editing in Adobe Suite or DaVinci Resolve with ease. The performance is impressive, offering smooth and efficient workflows for creative professionals. However, the storage capacity is a bit of a disappointment. In 2025, having 256GB as the base storage feels outdated—1TB should be the standard minimum. Overall, while the device excels in portability and performance, its limited storage holds it back from perfection.

This is the second Mac mini I have owned. I replaced the first one with a Mac Book about 10 years ago. Now retired I retired my Mac Book because I didn't need a laptop anymore and the Mac mini is a lot of computer for Avery good price. It is quick and has more memory and storage than I need. It is small and compact and it's not a Windows PC, which is what I always had at work and absoutley hated. Best Buy had it on sale for a good price. I am again a happy owner of a Mac mini!

    Apple- Mac Mini Desktop

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The Mac Mini M4 is one of the most impressive desktop computers available at its price point, and after spending significant time with it, I can say without hesitation that it earns every bit of the hype. Apple has packed its latest and most capable silicon into a chassis barely bigger than a hardcover book, and the result is a machine that rivals desktops costing two to three times as much. Whether you’re a creative professional, a power user running demanding productivity workflows, or someone diving deep into AI and automation tools, this machine rises to every occasion without breaking a sweat. It is quiet, fast, compact, and genuinely exciting to use every single day. The Best Buy Experience: From Click to Counter Without a Headache No review of this particular purchase would be complete without acknowledging how well Best Buy handled what was genuinely a chaotic product launch. The Mac Mini M4 was one of the most in-demand electronics releases of the year. Online retailers sold out within hours, shipping estimates stretched into weeks, and third-party sellers immediately inflated prices above MSRP. Getting one at launch without overpaying required either luck or a smarter strategy. Best Buy provided that smarter strategy in the form of their online order with in-store pickup option, and the execution was flawless from start to finish. The ordering process itself took roughly three minutes on the website. Critically, Best Buy’s site accurately reflected real-time inventory at local stores, which is something many major retailers still fail to do reliably. There is nothing more frustrating than completing an order only to receive a cancellation or an indefinite delay because the site showed inventory that didn’t actually exist. That didn’t happen here. The inventory was accurate, the ordering process was clean, and the confirmation came through immediately. Within about an hour of placing the order, a second notification arrived confirming the item was ready for pickup. Not days later. Not a vague “we’ll let you know when it’s ready” message that leaves you checking your phone every thirty minutes. One hour, confirmed, ready to go. The in-store experience matched the quality of the online process. Pickup was handled at a dedicated counter with a short line and staff who clearly knew what they were doing. The transaction took under five minutes. There was no upsell pressure, no confusion about the order, and no wasted time. Just a smooth, professional handoff of a product that a lot of people were competing to get. This is worth emphasizing because it’s genuinely impressive for a high-demand product launch. Best Buy had its inventory managed, its systems synchronized, and its staff prepared in a way that made the whole experience feel frictionless. In an era where buying popular tech can feel like a competitive sport full of bots, scalpers, and fulfillment failures, Best Buy delivered a retail experience that actually worked the way retail is supposed to work. For anyone considering where to purchase the Mac Mini, in-store pickup at Best Buy is a straightforward recommendation. Who Should Buy the Mac Mini M4 The Mac Mini M4 is the right choice for a wide range of buyers. If you already own a monitor, keyboard, and mouse and are looking for a compact, powerful desktop to anchor your setup, this is one of the best options available at any price point under $1,500. It is particularly well-suited for creative professionals doing photo and video editing, developers running local environments or AI tools, students and academics who need reliable performance for research and productivity, small business owners who want a capable machine without a large hardware budget, and anyone exploring AI, automation, or content creation as either a profession or a side project. It is also a compelling choice for anyone making the switch from Windows who wants a machine that will last five or more years, deliver consistent performance, and require minimal maintenance or troubleshooting. The one category of user who might want to look elsewhere is someone who needs a machine primarily for high-end PC gaming. While the M4 handles gaming better than any previous Mac chip, the Windows ecosystem still offers more titles and better graphics performance at equivalent price points for that specific use case. For everyone else, the Mac Mini M4 is difficult to argue against.
