Used it with an external GPU (Razor Core X with Radeon RX 580 Red Dragon Dual-Fan 8GB GDDR5 PCIe 3.0) for non-gaming purposes. Worked twice and then froze at boot load. Yes I always “manually eject” the eGPU from within OS X. Took it back to Geek squad and they could not fix it.

    Major Improvement Over 2012 Server

I used a maxed out version the previous Mac Mini (Late 2012 Mac Mini Server i7). It was a rock solid machine for all 5 years I used it. The last year has been rough though. Just browsing websites caused the machine to use the fan at full speed. Using Adobe applications would cause it to get super hot to the touch. Lagging was also starting to occur, if I was doing too many things at once. This new version is a significant improvement. Since I've bought it, the fan hasn't run once, even with 12 Illustrator and Photoshop tabs open and running videos in the background. In fact it doesn't even get warm to the touch. It's so wonderful to be able to work without hearing a constant blowing noise. The speed at which projects render and load are also greatly improved. This should be no surprise jumping form a 3rd generation i7 with 4 cores to an 8th generation i5 with 6 cores. It really is blazing fast. Performance aside, I do have some gripes with it. First and foremost is the fact that my Thunderbolt screen is no longer compatible without an expensive adapter. I thought this was kind of a middle finger to long time users, especially since Apple no longer produces a display. I also don't like how they only include 2 USB 3.0 ports. I get that USB C is better, but none of my office peripherals use it. And because I had to give up my Thunderbolt screen, that reduced my available ports even further. A $30 dongle added 6 ports, but I do think it is incredibly silly being that this is a machine meant to be used in an office environment. The WiFi also has major issues. Out of the box I was getting less than 1 mbps. After renewing the DHCP lease, and resetting my network a few times, I was able to resolve the issue, but I still experience WiFi slowdowns that I did not have with my old Mac Mini. Lastly, I really miss being able to have a secondary internal hard drive. I'm fine running one on the outside, but it is much less secure. Overall I really like the upgrade. At $1,050 It's a great value for the money.

    Love my new Mac Mini!

Coming from a late 2013 15" mbp, decided I would like to move to a newer system. Not at all happy with Apple's lack of ports on the new mbp's but didn't want to wait for the iMac refresh so I could get a modern cpu so decided to go with this 6-core i5 Mac mini. Will be using a 500gb SSD external drive for additional storage and also will be upgrading to 32gb or ram soon. I mainly do a lot of accounting on it with a fair share of social media and video streaming on it. So far my impression is that I much prefer this set up, using a 27" 4k LG display rather than a current gen 15" mbp. I would have liked to have gotten the i7 Mac mini but for my purposes I don't think I'm going to miss much. After a year, if it really matters to me I'll just hand this down to one of my kids and get an i7 model next year maybe. So far I'm very impressed and happy with my decision! I can't wait to get a Razer Core X eGPU (Haven't decided on a specific gpu card yet) connected to this to give it some legit graphics handling capability because what currently comes with it is just enough to do the minimum. Love that I can actually mod this up to do actual work with!

A fast reliable mac computer. A very good cheap option to get into apple, as long as you have your own accessories. Keyboard, monitor etc

    Slow, Small, Space Gray

Nice for small foot print, space gray is a nifty finish. As a computer I have never hated something so much. Safari sucks, Chrome kills it with a dozen or so tabs open for more than a couple hours. Some Firefox addons (like AdBlock) can make the system have to force quit or force shutdown. Excel and outlook stop responding working with more than 3 files at a time. List goes on.
