Based on your description, it may need a soft reset. To power the device ON with a soft reset: Connect the device to a power source and then press and hold the power button/power switch in the on position for 8-10 seconds. Here is a link to a Garmin Support Center article that provides additional information and a video:  http://bit.ly/2mUqF0t

I just purchased this unit & for me it works great! It recalculates the route if you miss you're turn & also tells you when curves are ahead as well as RR tracks, food stops, gas station's, banks, Etc,. I am loving this unit & the mount works great! Battery life not so great so keep it plug in while navigating. Otherwise this unit works flawlessly!!

I love this Garmin. I have an older model and this one is soooo much better. Gives great detail such as places for gas and money along the way. Gives you the posted speed limit and how fast you are going. When exiting gives you a 3D view of the exit sign. Very detailed. Love it.

If you are like me and you're terrible with directions this GPS is for you! I had to drive 11 hours by myself to move and it was perfect. I was hesitant to use it for the first time but it helped me so much. I would drive for hours and it would give me gas stations and food options near by. It tells you when the speed limit changes. Also does split screen for people that like to see what kind of curve is ahead. I would definitely recommend. You can't go wrong having this GPS in addition to your phone.

I bought this item to replace my older nuvi 205. So far I'm liking it. It's bigger than the nuvi 205 and it's more than just a gps map, it is an info center with alerts about speed changes, approaching curves, traffic light cameras, businesses locations and more. I'm also glad I got it on sale at Best Buy for $119.99 and the next day it went back up to regular price.

    It's okay but...

The Garmin is good in that it connects directly to GPS, no internet connection required. HOWEVER, the way you have to input your destination has got to be the stupidest idea ever. It is not straight forward AT ALL. Why can't we just TYPE IN THE ADDRESS FOR GOD'S SAKES??!!!!? But no, they can't just make it the EASY way, no - it is VERY convoluted and it took me FOUR tries to just figure it out! Someone was high when they created this programming. AAARGGGHHHH!!! Also, the "lifetime map updates" - well yes, BUT you have to plug it into your own PC to get those. And I only use a MIFI unit at home, so it took OVER AN HOUR. Honestly, if I could be sure to find another GPS that actually did things right FOR SURE, with no lies, I would buy it. Let me know if you have a recommendation!

    Unusable product

    Posted .

I bought this because I had previously used two Nuvis. They have added a "feature" that makes it unusable. When you are driving alerts pop up in the form of orange banners that obliterate the vital data you need to know what street to turn on. These are alerts that warn you about curves ahead, railroad tracks, animal crossings, schools, speed limits, find parking. None of this is necessary and it can't be turned off. Tech support at Garmin told me you can't turn it off and that they have this stupid "feature" on all their products ow. I am switching to a new GPS. BTW the animal crossing even turned on while I was driving on the 10 Freeway in LA just when I looked down to see what exit I needed. Great!!

DO NOT BUY LASTED 1 hour

this is the biggest piece of junk I have ever wasted money on. I have heard bad things about Garmin, but read good reviews for this particular item so I bit the bullet and ordered. I have a TomTom that is 5 years old that has never left me stranded, prior to that I had a Magellan that I gave to a friend and they are still using it. I purchased this item on 2/26/2018 it arrived 2/28/2018 and just turned it on to verify it worked. Today I downloaded the Garmin express app to update the maps and software, plugged the gps into my computer (which is also new) it powered up and the app said there was software and map/traffic updates. You have to update the software first, then when that is finished (appx 1 hour) it asks you to unplug the gps for 5 sec and plug it back in. I unplugged the gps from the computer, it was almost at full battery, it powered off and has never turned back on. Plugged it back in, like the app says, nothing, pushed the power button, nothing the computer doesn't see it, and even unplugged from the computer it will not turn on. It is completely dead and useless after one update and never even getting to use it in my vehicle. Before you ask, yes it is charged. The battery showed nearly full when the update was complete before being prompted to restart it/unplug it. yes I tried holding the power button as suggested in the online manual. The unit is completely dead after less then an hour. I have had it for 4 days, it was powered up for less then an hour. I am returning to Best Buy and they better give me a complete refund with none of that restocking fee nonsense for an item that never worked. Invest in a TOMTOM, mine still works and its five years old and that's all my friends and family have ever owned and have never had a problem. JUNK JUNK JUNK

I tried. I really tried to like this Garmin 51 gps. Here is a list of the things that made me return it. Some may seem trivial, but one has to wonder why they would do these things: 1. Sticker on it says "ready to use" right out of the box. No it isn't. You have to download the software using a program "Garmin express" that would not install on my Windows 7 computer. I was able to install it on a Windows 10 laptop so OK, but then it takes several hours to download the map data. 2. When I first plugged it into my computer the screen is so dim you can hardly tell it is even on. This does not change either. Only when you plug it in to the car charger is the screen bright enough to see. 3. I then spent a couple of hours trying to create a route I could use to navigate to my job which is a few hundred miles away. This was exceedingly frustrating! When you try to use the touch screen to create "waypoints" the screen resolution changes every time you try to move the map! You can not zoom in or out to a comfortable resolution and then move the map. When you move the map it "zooms in"!! This is insane. I tried for about 2 hrs. and was never able to get it create a route (which is the only reason I bought it.) I finally gave up. There is no way you can try to use it while driving. I wasn't even able to use it while sitting in my car not moving. 3. I tried to use their "base camp" software to create the route on my desktop, but that didn't work either. The resolution of the map was so bad I couldn't even see the street I live on! This new version of the Garmin GPS (51) is way worse than the old model I bought about 10 years ago. Very disappointed.

While the GPS is ready to use out of the box, we would suggest using the Garmin Express program to check for any map and software updates that may have been made available while the device was in transit and on the retailer’s shelf. If you haven't installed Garmin Express please download it from the following link:  www.garmin.com/express Garmin

bought one that new out of the box was defective, Garmin sent me another one, notice I didn't say sent me a new one? That one didn't work either. for some reason it had the power connector on the back which was the older connection type of usb from four years ago. It is sad, I still have my old Garmin from the late 2000s which was built like a tank and only stopped working due to battery failure. this new build quality feels cheap and the software to update is so time consuming to use, it seems like every part of Garmin is just an outsourced piece of the pie with no real crust holding it together.

    Hands on...constantly

I could not use this as alerts came up constantly. Every corner, every animal sign, an alert would come up, making this device impossible to use. I even got pulled over by the Italian police as I was "playing with an electronic device while driving." You cannot take these alerts out and this device forces you to keep your eyes on the GPS and not on the road. There was just no way in using this and I missed too many turns because of the alerts. This GPS is a safety hazard that is technically illegal in states that have laws that prevent electronic device use while driving. DO NOT BUY THIS!!!
