Great replacement for ISP leased router

Bought this to replace a CenturyLink leased router. Did have to contact Netgear over a minor connection issue, but their tech support resolved it quickly and registered my product at the same time. I keep it in modem mode only as I use an Apple Airport Extreme. Works great and noticeably faster than the router it replaced.

Good price and saves from renting ISP modems

My Centurylink modem went bad after 6 years. They wanted to charge me $4.99 a month to rent a replacement. In 5 years, that modem would cost me $300.00. The modem I purchased for less than $60.00 is capatible with Centurylink and is working just fine and it will pay for itself within a year. Don't let Centurylink take your money for a replacement modem and get the Netgear one from Bestbuy.

    Replaced old modem

The old modem needed at least 4 tries to start it back up after shutting down for a storm. This modem starts right up. To install it for Century Link, I had to call Netgear. The installation process was long and tedious. Also, registration was aggravating because questions that required answers for the registration weren't easily distinguished from just "data gathering". The modem seemed to work, Not all of the web pages were loading, though. When I fussed with the ethernet cable, it worked better temporarily. I borrowed a cable from work and the modem worked perfectly for a week. I switched back to the cable that came with the modem, and had the problem again with not all web pages loading. Best Buy required an exchange of the whole modem package, not just the cable. I refused because I didn't want the hassle of installing another modem. I'm using the modem now with another cable and it works perfectly.

Great modem with some start up difficulties

I am not a novice at installing modems and routers having had several modems and routers in the past, but this modem required some special configurations well beyond the capabilities of the programs on the enclosed CD because of my present internet server's unique requirements. I called my internet server and spoke with their repair service folk, but, aside with providing me with two critical numbers which I needed later, they suggested I call Netgear as understandably they weren't trained on all modems. I was reluctant to call Netgear right off because of several reviews posted here noting long waits and very poor customer service. For that reason, I went to my internet server people first as I could usually get through to them fairly rapidly. My reluctance was unnecessary. I called Netgear and I did have to wait almost 20 minutes to speak with a tech specialist, but at the completion of my Netgear session, I could see why the long wait. My wait was greatly rewarded by a gentlemen who spoke excellent English and patiently spent well over an hour (hence probably a long wait for others) helping me to configure not only my modem, but my n900 router, a second PC and three iPads. SUPER OUTSTANDING CUSTOMER SERVICE. Hope he doesn't get fired for going well above and beyond.

    No Worky !!!

Had to send ours back....No Good....our ISP checked it 5 times...No Worky. Got this and the Nighthawk in a bundle (not from Bestbuy) in three weeks the Nighthawk was intermittent, and the modem just sucked. Our Cox Signal strong and fast, but the Modem kept kicking off showing full lights on the front of the modem. Packed it up and back it went. NOW as for the NETGEAR (Phillipines) Customer Support...It took them 2 hours on the phone when We (Computer Savvy) couldn't get the software to take the info we Had to enter, so the modem would not let us online. CALL your ISP , get the info needed first, then call Netgear Customer Service. Then if it still doesn't work, wait for it....wait for it...NETGEAR WILL HANG UP ON YOU....3 times this happened to us....they could not handle the problem, and STILL could not tell us the MODEM was BAD. Ok...roll forward 2 more weeks...Googled Netgear and got a phone number for the main office in California....called left a message...on Fri Nite Oct 31st. Monday Morning I got a call returned from Netgear. Talked to a nice guy, and I told him about the lousy Customer Service I received, as well as they really needed to RE-train the People to KNOW when a MODEM is bad and not take 2 hours of time on the phone to let a Customer know about it. then Hang up 3 times. These were Hang-ups not just disconnected.........not happy with Netgear Products. OH and the Nighthawk became an intermittent signal even after I hooked up the old Linksys Gateway (with Cox Customer Service on the phone to re verify my connection was good). So both items went back. No more Netgear modems, or routers for us.

    Low Speeds with Centurylink

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The unit installed and connected easy enough but it would not reliably connect at 7mbps. It would only connect at 5mbps. I called Centurylink and when they rebalanced the line, the unit would renegotiate to 7mbps, but 2 minutes later it would drop the DSL connection and then renegotiate back to under 5mbps. In all, I called Centurylink and Netgear 3 times each (alternately). The first netgear call resulted in them having me disable the NAT and declaring the issue resolved. The second netgear call resulted in them having me reboot and declaring the issue resolved. The third netgear call resulted in them hanging up on me while putting me on hold. While that isn't too uncommon, them not calling back when they SPECIFICALLY asked for a callback number for just such an event is annoying. Maybe they were trying to save on international calling charges from India... I considered blaming the line coming into the house, but I then put an Actiontec G1000 (also purchased from BB) on the line and it connected up fine at 7mbps without any tech support calls, rebalancing, or voodoo rituals. Thankfully the modem is within 30 days of purchase, so this piece of ...plastic.. is going back ASAP. If you have a slow connection and never plan to upgrade, it may be worth using, otherwise look for something else because if you have issues you wont get any useful help from the manufacturer.

Unreliable, Backed by Poor Customer Service

On purchase, I connected this modem to my home network and configured it easily. However, for the six weeks I've had it, it has dropped its DSL sync one to two times a day, taking multiple minutes each time to reconnect. This is disruptive and has cost me a good deal of time. Netgear's email support offered a non-solution (re-flash the same firmware onto the unit) before suggesting I call the support line. After speaking with no less than four different people, Netgear installed remote control software on my computer--an overly invasive troubleshooting process--and, after more than an hour on the phone, adjusted one numeric setting (MTU). That was yesterday; today, the modem has dropped twice. Calling support today, the technician explained that I cannot request an RMA without going though the troubleshooting process once more; he was then obstinate in refusing to patch me through to a supervisor. Persistence paid off and I spoke with a supervisor; I explained the situation, he reviewed the case, and spoke with his supervisor. After another hour on the phone, I was sent back to the AVR menu. I am sorely disappointed in Netgear's service; while I am sure this is little more than a manufacturing defect and not representative of overall quality--I've not had issues like this with any Netgear equipment in the past--I have purchased my last Netgear product. I have ordered another manufacturer's modem and I will discard this device. This has been $50 poorly spent.; I would recommend investing a little bit more into a Zyxel instead of taking the chance.

Lasted 5 months before becoming defective

I bought this modem to replace an old 2Wire 2701HG-B. It worked well for about 4 months, and then it could not reach download speeds above 0.72 mbps. Webpages took a long time to load, and there would be some dropped connections. I used this in connection with a Netgear router N300w WNR 2000v5. I recommend that if you do buy this, set it up so that it is in the vertical position, using the feet that are supplied. I did not initially set it up this way. Rather, I had it on its side. There were little feet on the side, and the box shows the modem on its side. It looked like setting it up either horizontally or vertically were equally good. Unfortunately, I found this was not the case. Using the modem in a horizontal position causes it to overheat, even though there are feet there. If I had not started using it horizontally, it might have lasted longer. Another thing that happened shortly after I started using the modem would be that a red light would come on. Sometimes this seemed to affect the Internet speed, and sometimes it didn't seem to matter that it was on. While it was on its side, it would heat up a lot, making the modem hot to the touch. When it got too hot, it would cause Internet speeds to drop quite a bit. It would go down to dial-up speeds. When this happened, we would have to turn off all our devices, unplug everything from the modem, and then wait ten minutes. We would then turn everything back on. This fixed slow issues for awhile. We had to do the above routine more and more often -- sometimes every couple of days. After doing this for awhile, I decided to try the modem in the vertical position. I noticed an immediate improvement. The modem did not get nearly as warm. Our Internet speeds did not drop as much, and I had to unplug it less often. This worked pretty well for a couple months. However, about a month ago, our speeds got a little slower again. Websites would take awhile to load, and there seemed to be some dropped connections. I ran speed tests multiple times a day. The fastest speed that I would get was 0.72 Mbps. Unplugging the modem and plugging it again did not help. After dealing with this for a couple weeks, I got fed up with it, and decided to try the old 2Wire again. The 2Wire gave speeds that were normal for us (1.00 Mbps download), however the latency is really high with the 2Wire. I suspect that the 2Wire may be going bad, which is why we got the Netgear one to begin with. Unfortunately, it does not seem that companies make things to last very long anymore. The choices for DSL modems are slim. If you do get this model, remember to set it up vertically, otherwise it will die on you in a few months.

OK, but NEEDS A SEPARATE ROUTER for WIFI!!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I had no problem with Netgear customer service (accent, but understandable and very knowledgeable) or Verizon, but I did have to spend a lot of time talking to both to get this modem to connect to the internet. Then, just as we were almost finished, the Verizon rep said "you can't get wifi with that modem, right?" which was news to me. The 2008 model Verizon modem I was replacing had done both the internet and wifi. I thought if we replaced one box with one newer box that it would do the same. No. Apparently I was supposed to know that wifi would require a separate router...which is way more expensive than the modem, Verizon is sending me a new modem, supposedly free of charge, that will again do both. I strongly advise DSL customers to look into this possibility with your provider before buying a new modem on your own. Now I know.

    Windstream DSL modem broken?

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This ADSL modem works flawlessly on the Windstream network - the included instructions and web user interface made it a snap to set up and use. Just make sure you have your login / password from the ISP. A bonus is that now the connection seems to be much more stable. So if your modem recently turned into a small paperweight, save yourself some money (and forget the ISP-supplied junk) and drop this modem in as a replacement.

Overall a great dsl modem. Just plug it in and use the install cd and it works like it should. My only problem is the first one died after one year of use. I admit it is always on and my family and I are always using the internet, but only one year? Bought a second one and got the extended warranty.

Modem gets the job done, however I'm on my 2nd one within a year. Low price makes it a good option compared to renting modem monthly from provider. Easier to keep purchasing compared to waiting and dealing with ISP.
