Took awhile to get up and running, USB 3 connection very important. Finally got it running, and it was excellent, but they came out with an update that has caused problems, Unit is unusable until they come up with a fix. Stay tuned.

    Won’t stay connected

We did manage to get it to work for a few hours one evening. Every other time we had connectivity issues. This seems to be a common complaint according to the Oculus forum. We ended up returning. Customer service said they’ve had lots of them returned. When it did work, the graphics were awesome and the games were lots of fun. Unfortunately we had more frustration than we were willing to deal with, as it simply didn’t work except for the one evening. Hoping Oculus comes up with a solution soon!

Both of mine broke, Facebook required to play

Oculus is trash in my opinion; the Best Buy extended warranty saved me on these cheapo headsets TWICE. Feels like the headset ships with components that are seemingly made to break. Also, remember that Oculus is a Facebook company and that you have to use a Facebook account to play your VR games. I’m glad my headset broke before I had to start using a Facebook account to play, and this is why I will never buy one of these headsets again.

They have a long way to go to straighten out issues with these things. My computer is well within spec to run the oculus and worked great upon first setting it up. then connectivity issues started and got to the point where it simply would not connect. Updated every possible driver and followed the vague troubleshooting instructions without any luck. I'm bringing it back...they can have it!!!!

It started out fine then after a month, it stopped working. I have contacted Oculus and they gave me a possible fix. It started to black screen on me. It will take a while to run thru it.

I got a bad unit.. Seems the problems I was having was a known issue with the Oculus. The portions that did work consistently were exceptional.. And if it worked well i'm sure it would be a 4 or 5 star product.

Didn't even last a year. Bought this in November 2019, started having issues in April 2020, and stopped being useful in probably June 2020. The Rift S crashes after less than five minutes of use, re-installed all applications (SteamVR, Steam, games, Oculus software, graphics drivers) and even completely re-installed Windows 10. Waste of time and money, most disappointing purchase ever. Contacted Oculus support, gave me instructions of what to do, followed them and sent them a reply and was ghosted. $400 just collecting dust now.

I wish I could say that I had a good experience with this, but... not the case. I researched up & down to make sure that this would be compatible with one of our home PC's. We checked off all of the boxes. My son really wanted a Quest, but those were pretty much impossible to find before Christmas. I convinced him Christmas morning that this was better. Talk about eating my words!! After hours to install the software, none of our computers would allow for gameplay. Totally zapped my son's enthusiasm Christmas morning.

Great for newcomers but POOR upgrade from original

    Posted .

This is classic two steps forward and 4 steps back. If this is your first VR headset then be prepared to be amazed. If you have a working Rift already then save that $400 for whatever comes next. The new S gives you slightly higher resolution and improved lenses which help reduce screen door effect and those god rays, but the display is now an LCD screen vs the old OLED which offered better contrast and pure blacks. Now blacks are washed out so space games look muddy. The new S also reduces the refresh rate from 90hz on the original to 80hz which may cause issues with those prone to VR sickness. There is no IRD slider so the headset is locked at 64mm for your pupil distance. This can be tweaked through software but not nearly as good as the slider on the original. Headset is heavier but also more comfortable thanks to the HALO design that's a lot like the PSVR head strap. Headset has built-in speakers but nothing that goes over the ear so sound is much weaker and no bass. There is a headset jack and you'll probably want to use it for best immersion. The eye box slides forward (like PSVR) making it great for gamers with glasses. The best thing about the Oculus Rift S is the ease of setup. The camera sensors are all built into the headset so you no longer need 2 (or 3) sensors positioned around the room. This means much fewer cables. The entire headset connects with a single USB-A and a DisplayPort plug. If using a laptop make sure you have a DisplayPort plug on your computer. DP-to-HDMI adapters don't seem to work. Overall the minor improvements are NOT worth upgrading if currently have the original Rift and it still works. If you are a newcomer to VR or want to clean-up your cable situation or just have $400 kicking around and are a sucker for new technology then definitely give this a shot. And when you do make sure you play LONE ECHO - still one of the best VR games on the Rift.

Just got this in today and after messing with it for 6 hours, I was informed the newest update corrupts the tracking making it impossible to play. (This means the controllers lag, disconnect, and go crazy in game even if youre not moving them..)This evidently, has been going on for a month and lots of people are now UNABLE to play their games due to this! It was a very frustrating experience for me. And I don't want it to happen to you either! WAIT FOR THE NEXT UPDATE before you purchase this item and that is IF they fix the issue =/

the first few days weren't so bad with the device but after about a month just out of nowhere it will stop tracking the controllers and i cant play, i can reset the game or the program as a whole but it makes me redo the guardian system everytime and the same problem happens again and again. so sadly now i have a $400 paper weight cause its more useful as that then it is as a gaming VR headset. sadly i cant return it since im outside the return time policy. so i get to wait until oculus puts out an update to fix this issue

I'm a big fan of oculus products, but the Rift S was the forgotten middle child of the Oculus family. Even after multiple updates and using it between laptop, desktop, another desktop, the static issues and screen blackouts remained. If you're going to buy an Oculus product, get a used Quest or a new Quest 2, and if you don't like the head mount, there are aftermarket head straps if you like the Playstation VR style used here. Also not Glasses friendly.

Fun for a couple of weeks. The Rift-S literally failed three days past my Best Buy return window. I left it on overnight and wont turn on any more. BB were nice about it, but it can't be returned. Oculus support have strung me out for two weeks asking me to reinstall Nvidia drivers, update windows, and send them logs. They have no idea how to fix it, and I'm having to fight them for an RMA just to get warranty service. Terrible experience with Oculus. Avoid their products at all costs.

Didn’t work the support for this company is Horrendous. They take 3-5 days to respond to u and just regurgitate all the same things listed on their self help forums and YouTube videos even if u tell them u did a step already they just tell u try it again with X and Y variables even tho common sense would tell u that wouldn’t fix the issues. I personally think it’s criminal that occulus knows there is a wide spread issue with their tech but are still allowed to sell it and have no solution for it
