My first foray into real VR
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My only other VR experience is with Google Daydream using an original Pixel smartphone. This is so much better. The setup was super easy. Download the desktop App and follow along while you hook things up and the biggest wait was for updating the firmware on the headset. As you finish setup, you setup the "Guardian" which is basically outlining your available play area in the real world. I can play most SteamVR games with this, and also a lot of games from Viveport (HTC Vive's version of the Oculus Store). In fact, there is a free two month offer for Viveport Infinity (Like Netflix or more correctly, like XBOX Game Pass for VR) during June 2019. Sign up for the free 14 day trial after making an account with your RIFT S connected to the PC and you will get an offer to redeem a two month subscription by Sept 1st 2019. This is a great way to try out a lot of the games available to play on the RIFT S. The visuals are great, the sound is a bit flat, I'm not an audiophile, but even I could tell that there is hardly any bass there. You can use earbuds, there is a standard jack for them. My gaming system is a mid range gaming PC and it handles the RIFT S just fine. DisplayPort is the big sticking point, you really cannot use this unless you have an available DisplayPort on your video card. Now coming to the obvious and major cons (besides the weak audio). The software/drivers don't seem ironed out. After about 15 to 20 minutes of using the RIFT S, one of two things happens, or both. Problem One, Passthrough camera no longer works and you only see static when you should be seeing the black white weird version of the real world. Around this point you also may have problems seeing the game you are playing correctly. Problem Two, The tracking of the controllers gets lost by the RIFT S and they are all over the place or not tracking at all. The quickest way to fix this is to take off the headset and go into the Oculus App on the desktop and go to "Settings" then "Beta" then click on "Restart Oculus". Then you are good to go for another little while. There seems to be a lot of problems with this out there among users, because the support mentions these two problems specifically and states for one of them to wait patiently for firmware improvements they are planning to make after launch. And I put in a support ticket for these issues and have not even had a generic response back from support in 2 days. Problem 3 is after a bit of resetting the RIFT S from the Beta menu, it will decide you need to do the setup all over again and you have to go through setting up the guardian again, which doesn't take long, but is a bit of a pain. This just leads to these not being very useful for everybody to use, as you have to be aware of the issues and how to compensate for them. Not everybody is having these issues, it seems, so I would still recommend this to a friend. I have to give these an Average rating. I'm sure in time they will get these firmware/software issues ironed out and it will most likely change the rating to Good or Excellent in my mind.
