Step up in clarity, Step back in sound
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This headset gives a noticeable improvement over the original Rift when it come to clarity and reduce screen door effect. The setup is quick and simple, but the onboard speakers are not that great. If you have a rift I would say this is a suitable upgrade at the price, but if you have a bigger budget then there are more complete options.

Best VR expereince for the price.
||Posted . Owned for 4 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Oculus Rift S is by far, the best bang for your buck when it comes to VR. Outstanding performance, great use and overallm pretty decent for VR. Unless you have glasses. Pros: -The definitive VR experience under $500. Amazing visuals, very dark blacks, comfortable head-strap, modular design, easy-to-learn controls all wrapped up in a suitable package. -The display has a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 with a moderately low refresh rate of 80 Hz on a SINGLE screen (More on that later). The screen shows very vivid colors, and very black shadows for a very immersive experience. -Very accurate "Inside Out" tracking. There are no lighthouses or camera boxes needed for the Rift S. It's just the headset and 2 controllers. Perfect for small rooms, and big open spaces. -Adjustable headstrap. The Rift S features a halo-designed head-strap, which has added padding that can be removed and replaced with 3rd Party Faux Leather or easy-to-clean silicone covers. You can also adjust the distance between the screen and your eyes, as well as how tight the head-strap is with audible "Clicks". - Built-In Speakers and Microphone. Don't have headphones? No problem, the Rift S has built in speakers that sound clear and concise. Not too bad, but not outstandingly great either. Other VR headsets for the same or lower price than the Rift S do NOT have speakers at all, so I consider it a very good pro. You are also able to use your own headphones if you so please, as the Rift S has a built in audio jack. - Two Cables. The Rift s comes with only 2 thin cables that attach to your PC. One Display Port cable, and one power cable. Both are very thin, and very easy to ignore when playing. In comparison, the Original HTC Vive has 3 cables, 2 of which are very thick and can actually snag the headset of your face! The Rift S does not have this problem. Cons: -There are a few drawbacks of the Rift S that might make or break getting it for yourself or a friend. Batteries, the lenses, required applications, and the quality of the product itself. Most of these can be fixed with additional purchases or ignored completely, but the warning signs are still here. -The Lenses. Do not buy the rift S if you have horrible eye-sight. If you're glasses are too thick, too big, or too pronounced, and you can't see anything far away without them- Do Not Buy The Rift S. Unless you want to shelve out another $120 that is. VR headsets essentially put 2 magnifing lenses front of your eye, to simulate depth and peripherals on a flat screen. The housing of the headset is fairly tight, so if you have small circluar glasses, they should easily fit within the headset. If you have rectangular, thick prescription, or uniquely shapped glasses, they will not fit, and have the chance of scratching your eyeglasses or your headset lenses . Scratched lenses are very noticable, and expensive to replace. However, there are 2 solutions to these issues, if you don't want to spend $1000 on the Valve Index. There are purchasable snap-on prescription lenses from a company called "Widmo vr" (This isn't sponsored one bit, this is the only company I've found that has a reputable background with VR players who have glasses) but they are another $100-$150 purchase you'd have to make. You can also prevent scratches on the headset lenses by using watch film protectors. A 43mm diameter film protector is the perfect fit for a Oculus Rift S. They can be gotten fairly easy and cheap ($20). -The Single Display. The Rift has a single screen. One Screen for two eyes. If you have an IPD below 60, or above 70, you might strain your eyes a bit too much and get headaches. The optimal IPD range is between 61.5 and 65.5mm. You can digitally change the IPD range between 58mm to 72mm which will adjust the distance between the 2 images on the single screen. The LENSES will not move at all, only the pictures on the screen will. - The Oculus Store, and buggy required applications. The Oculus application is required to run when using the Rift s. If you as so much touch the headset when not in use, the Oculus application will immediately open. The setup starter, and Gaurdian system are very buggy, constantly resets, and are a pain to work with. But, the Oculus store does come with exclusive games and sales, and DOES NOT REQUIRE A FACEBOOK ACCOUNT to use. Overall, it's up to the user experience to decide if this is a con or pro. If you are an avid Steam user, this is just another clunky program to use, if you're new to PC gaming and VR, this is a godsend. - The AA Batteries. The controllers do not have an internal battery. Which is good, and bad. Good, for the fact that if your batteries die, overheat or break, you are not out of a controller. Bad, for the fact you constantly have to replace them, which just adds to the total cost. I've been using energizer AA heavy duty batteries and they last about 8-10 hours of game-play, but Im sure you could try rechargeable AA batteries to help. The battery door is easily removable, if you don't have a silicone grip cover, which I recommend. You get pretty immersed, and can accidentally throw a controller to hard, and have it slip out of your hand. It's a small drawback, but most other VR headsets have chargeable controllers. In this department, The Rift S feels outdated. -Lastly, the quality. The entire rift S feels firm and responsive, but some of the plastic casing and molding feels utterly cheap. The Analog sticks feel a bit squishy, and the casing on my Rift S has cracked above the slider. Some spots on the headset just feels poor in quality, nothing more. I have a Geeksquad protection plan because of this low-quality feeling plastic. In conclusion, the Rift S is a PERFECT price point for comfort, play-ability, and overall design. I only do not recommend it, if you have a heavy prescription eyeglasses and don't want to drop another $120.

Awesome experience
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Not that this product needs a positive review as Best Buy can’t keep it in stock, but there’s a reason. If you have a decent gaming PC, and want to play games in VR, the Rift S is the choice as it’s half the price if it’s coolest competitor, and for a nearly identical product and performance. 5 Stars!

Very Happy
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This was for my son. This is our third VR device. He started with the Gear VR using his Galaxy 8. I wanted to make sure he liked VR and this was a good way to experiment without lots of investment. He liked it, but I noticed the 'screen' affect on the display. So, we upgraded to Oculus Quest. This was a very solid device. Didn't have to be connected to a computer and didn't use a phone. However, he couldn't play some games, like Minecraft. I returned the Quest and got the Rift S. We connect it to a PC (it MUST be connected to a PC) running a GTX 1070. This is the ultimate VR setup. Very smooth streaming and plays all VR games with no problems. This version of the Rift doesn't need any trackers set up in the room. Third time is a charm. We love this Vr headset. If you don't mind connecting to a PC and you have PC hardware that can support it, this is the way to go.

VR has arrived...
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. In a word....stunning. For first time VR users this thing is going to blow your socks off. Those that Already own an original Rift you are going to upgrade your experience with better graphics and a 1000 percent easier setup since sensors are no longer required. All in all this device is very polished and will not disappoint.

Fun!!
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this for my 16 year old son for Christmas. We ended up having to upgrade his GPU to get the Rift to run w/o tremendous lag, so I strongly suggest that you make 100% certain that you have the minimum requirements met with your pc by looking on the manufacturers website directly. We checked online & thought we were good, but we were misinformed. Other than that, he's enjoying it. It comes with a few games that are okay. It takes a little getting used to, especially trying to grab things within the game. I love how it's pc powered & it was pretty quick & easy to download the software. Its real user friendly & you can get some pretty fun & inexpensive games for it.

I'm not sure who loves this more, him or me. The video graphics on these goes are amazing. It's super easy to learn the controls. Everything is so life like and you can get lost in this VR for days. Highly recommend.

Good headset but technical issues were a dealbreak
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really really wanted to like this headset. I have owned an Oculus Quest and currently own an Oculus Quest 2. So I figured i'd try a legit PC headset and get a Rift S since the were on sale for $299. The quality is pretty good, The headset feels solid and the head strap is not uncomfortable. Compared to the Quest headsets you put it on your head a little funky, but that's probably me being used to the Quest. Setup was iffy as the Oculus software didn't detect the headset right away. I had to plug and unplug and re-plug the headset a couple of times to get the software to find it, Once it did detect the Rift S it was a fairly simple setup and I was finished. The headset worked well in SteamVR as well as with Oculus's Desktop software. The function of the software and headset itself was perfectly fine but the technical aspect of connection was a major annoyance and eventually a deal breaker. Everytime I rebooted the PC the Rift S would not detect and disable the USB port it was plugged into. It would remain this way until you unplugged and plugged back in the headset. Due to the location of my PC this was a major issue. I googled for fixes to try and fix the issue on my end but it turns out this is a long standing issue Oculus has not addressed. Keep in mind it doesn't affect all PCs as it seems random which ones it does. I just got unlucky and the Rift S did not like my particular motherboard (MSI MPG Z390 Gaming, also purchased at Best Buy). When the headset was working it did have great visuals and super smooth frame rates. The controllers were accurate even under fast motion. I also liked the connection cable wasn't obnoxiously thick and didn't weigh down my the visor on my head to make my neck hurt like the PSVR. If it weren't for the technical issue i'd have no problems at all keeping this headset. And as it's a longstanding issue with the Rift S i'd not just assume it's only my computer which is the problem. It's a good headset, it just didn't work out for me.

Amazing!!!!
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I absolutely love this rift S !!!! i owned the original rift with the sensors. i had 3 sensors total 2 in front and 1 in back. the tracking was OK but with the new Rift S the tracking is so much Better!!! Because the sensors are now in the head set it self, the tracking works great! i can finally pick things up off the ground during VR. without any issues. Also playing games are a lot smoother and again with the sensors built into the head set, tracking is perfect and works at all times. I am totally happy i bought the new rift S over my old rift. Sensor in head set makes a huge difference. Also instead of wearing headphones on the old rift, the Rift S still has sound but with out the bulkiness of head phones. this is great because i used to sweat a lot with the old rift and when you sweat the googles would get blurry with fogging up the lens. Now with the open concept of the new Rift S i don't sweat anymore therefore no more fogging up the lens. I absolutely recommend the Rift S over anything. IF your thinking of upgrading, its worth it.

Almost there
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this headset as an initial foray into VR flight simulation. I didn’t know if I would like VR, or if I could tolerate motion sickness. The headset is reasonably priced and has good specs. I have a high end pc and gpu. Resolution is pretty good, with minimal stuttering. Image quality is dependent on many factors, and I’m hopeful that it can be improved by tweaking some of the settings. I’m mostly flying orientation flights, as I’m trying to simultaneously set up flight controls. The limited dog fighting I’ve done is so different in VR than on a flat screen. Even with the lower resolution and stuttering, it’s amazing!

A better and simpler Rift!
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm an original rift owner. I love VR! I find the immersion therapeutic! However, i started ignoring my oringinal oculus quest due to the hassles of setting up the sensors and the discomfort of the headset especially that i wear glasses. The new design allows more space for glasses and has better weight distribution due to its new halo strap design. Granted, it looks a bit uglier than the original rift, but thats a personal opinion. Another plus is the visual clarity.its definitely more sharper than the original. Texts in game are far more crisper and clearer! The application of inside-out tracking is great! I can finally look wherever i want. I nolonger need to take a mental note if im facing the external sensors or which way im facing. Although im still tethered to my PC, I am more free! I dislike the newly designed touch controls though. I prefer the older designs as they felt more balanced in the hands. However, its a small price to pay for the freedom u get with inside tracking. Overall, its not a huge upgrade, but enough to rekindle my love for high quality PC VR.

Good headset but would probably buy the Quest 2
||Posted . Owned for 5 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I previously owned the Oculus Rift and decided to upgrade to the Rift S. I really enjoy not having to worry about setting up the sensors around the room and I can take this with me when I travel and connect it to my Razer Blade. It works well but I was surprised with the difference in the refresh rate. That is the reason for 4 instead of 5 stars. I was expected 10 Hz to make a difference but it does seem pretty noticeable. However, there is significantly less screen door effect and lens flare. If I was buying it again today, I would probably go with the Quest 2 with cable instead.

Not the best, but actually the best...
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Ok, so yeah that review title alone is kind of confusing, so allow me to elaborate on this: While you could go drop $1K on a Index, there are still good chances you might not have the horsepower in your machine to drive the index to reach said possible performance. This is where the oculus shines (in my opinion). I was lead to believe for YEARS that I didn't have a machine capable of running VR. I've ran this oculus under two different builds: Build A i7-4790K Trident G.Skill DDR3-2333 GTX 1660 TI Build B i5-7600K DDR4-3000 GTX 1660 TI Now while both these machines "ran" the headset in different ways, build B (and to my suprise) the better performing system. Now while Rig A had faster loads with hyperthreading, Rig B overall performed better with higher single core clock speeds, but took significantly longer to load experiences and games. TLDR: The modern day myth of "oh my machine isn't powerful enough" died in 2018. If you're running above a GTX 970, I suggest picking up one of these (if and when you can. I would advise looking up stock notification systems online, because it would appear these are being bought up by bots to only be resold for 200-250% mark up from MSRP). What sets this apart from all the other units is how incredible the experience is: no lighthouses. plug and play. Seriously how it should be (...in a world before 5G headsets lol). Pro tip to those who are set on buying one: invest in faceshields. Seriously...you're strapping basically a monitor to your face that will be sweating and getting oily (trust me, nobody doesn't have this experience after playing beat saber after 10 minutes lol). I have actually used quite a few different ones in the search for the perfect one, but wont name drop brands (since they aren't sold by Best Buy). DEFINITELY GET THE GEEK SQUAD WARRANTY!!!! There is nothing worse than having to RMA a headset w/o a safety net. You just spent $4xx on a monitor you're going to have actively strapped to your face: don't pass up on this one (T R U S T)

Lighter than a quest with extra tracking camera.
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This headset is made in partnership with Lenovo. Unlike the Oculus Quest here are the low points on this Oculus S. Cant replace foam on the halo headband, no adjustment to IPD, needs a computer and has cables tethered to it from the pc. The plus to this is the halo offers a slightly better fit for long gaming sessions, It has a bit extra tracking with the 5th camera by theory. It has 80hz capability vs 70-72hz in the Quest. I returned this unit for the Oculus Quest because many reasons, a huge reason is the Quest can have the same content streamed to it over wireless network and that will likely improve and become the standard method for content in future units.

The best ever
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The motion tracking is spot on, setup is very easy, it's a simple as connecting this to a USB 3.0 port and display port, the attached cord is non removable but is plenty long enough to move around comfortably. It has built in speakers on the headset but you are still able to use your computers main audio source which I would prefer for a better experience. The headset also has a built in mic and the controllers use a single AA battery if I'm not mistaken but those are included. This is also a good exercise tool, if you are trying to get or stay fit, I would recommend any game that requires you to move your arms in a swimming or flying motion, tennis or sports based games or even shooters. You'll be working out but won't even realize it because it's entertaining as hell and you won't have time to think about how exausted you are, you'll be focused on avoiding getting shot at or making sure you reload your weapon or swim to a surface for air. This has been one of my favorite toys I have gotten this year and I look forward to more content over the years.

||Posted . Owned for 1.5 years when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Best headset that just works. I just upgraded to HP Reverb G2 and god do I miss the ease of use and quality of the tracking/controllers. If only they just upgraded the screen to this headset it would've been perfect. Almost great out of the box
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The headset is very easy to setup compared to the original rift and games worked amazing while using the headset and controllers. As I have been putting more and more hours using the headset, I have noticed a couple things wrong with my right controller out of the box. The battery cover kept coming out of place and when playing beat saber I noticed the controller was also making a weird spring kind of sounded like the battery was rattling around inside about to come loose. Overall, without that slight annoyance, the headset is amazing and works well with lower-end gaming pcs.

Works and plays great!
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The device works great and very comfortable to wear which was a bit of a surprise, fantastic resolution and the controls are super responsive. The fact the device has the cameras built in to track movement is the very thing that sold this to me. I also have a PSVR and the Oculus Rift S is far better, I know its a bit unfair to compare them but I thought I mentioned that I have tried a few VR systems, including the previous Oculus which is a pain to set up with all the cameras and wires. I did have a little trouble with the initial set up, but that may have been on me, since it was Christmas morning and I was still pretty tired from the previous day. All in all an awesome VR system, plus the fact that I got it for $349 (post black Friday deal) was just icing on the cake.
