I wanted it to be what Sony promised.

I wouldn't really recommend this remote player. From its announcement, it was promised to be a dedicated and more reliable remote player than the app or another form of remotely playing PS games, but it doesn't really deliver. I have a decent network at home with really good down/up speeds (AT&T Fiber). My first issue was that the remote player did not want to connect to my PS5 console. I had to make modifications to the WiFi network. When it finally connected, all the games I tried appeared blurry even though my console and Remote Player were both in the same room right next to the modem. To make the remote player work a little "better" would require me moving the console even closer to hardwire it to my modem. I would still be limited by the Remote Player's WiFi and any interference around my house, and I refuse to move my console from the room its currently in. There are many devices in my house that can cause interference (all the cell phones, other consoles, computers, TVs, sound systems, etc.) Finally, I decided it wasn't worth the trouble, and I returned the Remote Player. Most people have told me they've had "okay" experiences with it or have had to move the console, buy a different router, etc. The reality of it is that this remote player should have WiFi 6 to be a more reliable Remote Player and most people don't have the home network to pair with that if it did have it. Build-wise, it's good. I would've paid double its price for an actual dedicated mobile console from Sony. As it stands, I rather not have this remote player.

I was very indifferent on buying the portal but after trying it out, it is definitely worth the price if you ever wanted to play your PS5 in handheld mode. The screen has really good colors and brightness even for a LCD screen!

Works great most of the time, even with the PS5 connected to ethernet and being in the same room as my router, I still get occasional connection issues where the image gets blurry and stutters or it it will disconnect. Battery life has been very good and the display looks great.

I was reluctant in getting this device since you can basically do the same thing with any mobile device - but there’s something about having a dedicated unit with familiar dual sense controls/feedback that makes it worth while. I’ve been using my iPad pro paired with a dual sense for remote play and this portal is much better. I’m clearing a lot of my backlog with this thing. Games look awesome, haptic feedbak is just like the dualsense. I would love it if it was more than just a ‘remote play’ device or if you could pair any set of earbuds, but those small complaints aside, this thing rocks. There’s finally enough availability so if you’re on the fence (like I was) so go get yours!

My only qualm with this device is it should work smoothly right out of the box without having to go through tons of tweaks. The initial impression while setting up this device was really bad. Couldn't get the timezone correctly even though connected to wifi+internet. Had to manually adjust the time and date to get through. Then there were some additional tweaks needed to actually get it connected to PS5. Then comes the lag part, for which needed to bit of googling to figure all the adjustments to get rid of lags and then finally you could get to the good part. Excellent ergonomics, beautiful screen. Gameplay is enjoyable. There is still a bit of lag particularly when you need swift and precise movements. I am hoping that such things would be fixed in the future versions of the device updates. I would definitely recommend if you have PS5 and not able to get hold of the TV screen for whatever reasons.

    PlayStation Portal

As a user of the Sony PlayStation Portal, I've found it to be a specialized device primarily for Remote Play with the PS5. The controller customization is somewhat limited, but the haptic feedback adjustments are useful, especially when playing more intense games. The Touchpad, integrated into the touchscreen, requires a double-tap for input, which takes some getting used to. The software is straightforward, focusing on essential settings like haptic feedback strength and brightness. Its processing power is intentionally limited, aligning with its primary purpose of Remote Play. In terms of Remote Play performance, I noticed a slight delay when playing on the same internet connection as my PS5, but it's manageable. However, using a mobile hotspot while away from home introduces a noticeable half-second input lag. Overall, while the PlayStation Portal is efficient for its intended use, it feels like it has a narrow audience, specifically catering to those heavily invested in PS5 Remote Play.

This beautiful device is stunning. I'm not an online multiplayer gamer. I love playing games with a story. I love putting in a lot of hours on the games story. I have not tested it with online gaming like COD or Fortnite. But if you're trying to beat any game and have people using the tv you usually have to use. It's 100% awesome. I just got all three spider games to grind. IT LOOKS AMAZING. I've put in almost 6 hours of Spiderman Remasterd and had a millisecond of lag one time. It's not it's own system. It's made for people who can't play when their loved ones are using that tv/monitor that connects to their PS5. If you're like me and just play for fun..DO IT..If you want a system that's as fast as a PC...This device wasn't made for that. Mad love to sony for this.

Weak connectivity (small range) and Lag

The PlayStation Portal is unfortunately not a great option for FPS gamers due to several limitations. The most significant issue is noticeable input lag, which makes precise aiming and quick reactions difficult. This problem is compounded by connectivity issues; even with a strong connection (my internet 500 mbps) to the modem, the Portal tends to lag whenever you move even slightly away from the router. These combined factors make playing fast paced, competitive FPS games on the Portal a frustrating experience.

I've greatly enjoyed my PS Portal. It's been convenient to be able to play my PS5 games around the house and not have to always be in front of the TV. My kids like to take the Portal with them to their grandparents' house, and it's worked perfectly for remote gaming there. We've used it a few times remotely with my phone's wifi hotspot, and it's hit or miss if it works. Sometimes it works perfect with the phone connection, but sometimes not at all. It depends how good your phone connection is. The screen quality is fantastic and all the buttons feel top quality. I am a little disappointed that you can't connect Bluetooth headphones to it, although the Sony Pulse Elites work great with the Portal. I can't wait to see what features get added with future software updates. I feel like the Portal is at the right price for the high quality and I would recommend it.

I originally preordered this from Playstation but I cancelled my preorder to wait on reviews. I was able to secure an open box - excellent Portal as I was going out of town and wanted to try it on the road. There are some things that could be improved, such as lack of Bluetooth support and lack of Internet Browser for Captive Portal APs, but for the most part this is awesome as long as you have a decent Internet connection. I would give this 4.5 stars out of 5 for this. While at my friend's house, we were both able to play online even with me remoting to my ps5 miles away. I do recommend, however, setting a static IP for your ps5 and port forward on your router as well as wiring your ps5 to your router. Games run smooth if you do this and have a decent Internet connection. While at home, this device works perfectly when the wife wants to watch Netflix and we share a TV.

Perfect for gamers who want to game but can’t because the TV is occupied, sleek design that feels great in hand, great quality and a very nice screen. Just make sure you have good internet before purchasing or else this product is useless.

I have a PS5 with disk drive so if i want to play a different game i have downloaded, i have to physically switch the disks in the console itself which defeats the purpose if im going to be away from the console or don’t want to switch it out every time. Curious to know who this would work with a digital ps5 as opposed to the physical disk console. Next issue I’ve ran into is a little bit of lagging. As it’s trying to mirror the console, it can lag a bit and depending on the game being played could cause issues. For what I do it’s minimal and can play through it. Overall it’s pretty cool and the screen size is big for handheld console. This has it’s time and place but would prefer to play on an actual tv if given a choice. Overall, if you’re a PlayStation fan and have a little money burning a hole in your pocket like I did, i’d say give it a try.

The PlayStation Portal Remote Player has been a surprisingly great addition to my PS5 setup. It’s designed for one purpose—remote play—and it delivers that experience with impressive consistency. The 8‑inch screen is bright, sharp, and responsive, making games look far better than I expected from a dedicated remote‑play device. Colors are vibrant, motion is smooth, and the overall image quality feels premium.

I’ve had my PS Portal for a little over two weeks, and all in all, it has exceeded my expectations. Playing at home, I’ve noticed very few signs that indicate I’m not playing my games natively on the portal. The picture on the display is crisp, the sound is pretty loud, and the build feels premium. The handheld experience is in a league of its own, in my opinion. The screen size, the familiar feel of the Dual Sense controller, and the haptic feedback almost feels like I'm playing on my PS5—minus the obvious screen size difference from a TV to an 8-inch screen. The PS Portal has given me the freedom to play anywhere in my house without the hassle of setting up remote play on my phone, laptop, and a controller. When my wife is watching her shows, the portal makes it easy and convenient to have the option to play. It’s a win-win for gamers like me!
