It loses connection and leaves you with out knowing where to go till it finally reconnects only to continue to keep losing it again and again. Bought and went on a road trip. The only saving grace was we found another Best Buy and exchanged this for one that worked.

cleared my maps

It seems it automatically erased all my maps i had downloaded and tried to reload them tonight...after 5 hours, was still not even 1/2 done. I believe i have a defective tomtom. I do not have receipt but you can bet i will be making a trip to best buy ASAP. not impressed.

Constantly searching for signal

quit working after 2 months

Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this to replace an old Insignia GPS which no longer had map updates. The MyDrive software worked very poorly; it would show that it was downloading an update and then switch to an error message. I found that to check the status I had to close the window but the update would still run in the background, so I'd re-launch it and see the status for a few seconds before the error message. It took almost 90 minutes to download and install the map updates, but they did install. On the other hand, once updated the unit actually works quite well, I had no issues with actually using it, other than the menu system being a bit awkward to navigate. Too bad the update system is so bad, I had considered returning it but now that it's updated I'll hang on to it.

It sounds like you've had a bit of a nightmare with the VIA 1415. Did you make sure you were using the most up to date map, and operating system before your trip? You can update your TomTom using the MyDrive Connect software, available here: www.tomtom.com/getstarted

Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Got it on sale for 89 bucks. Liked that it has Canada Maps at a cheaper price than the others. However due to its small 4.3 screen I can only recommend this for the occasional light GPS user. I am pretty nearsighted and its just a bit too small in screen size for me but I don't want to spend 100-150 or more for a bigger screen that has a Canada map built in. So I just drive a little slower and just pay more attention to the voice prompts.

They are good basic GPS units, and I wanted something similar to decrease the learning curve. This one fills that bill well. Good unit, rugged construction, and reasonably easy to operate.

Somewhat disappointed in maps as it frequently does not recognize street addresses. Very poor signal reception - I can sit at a point of origin for 5-10 minutes before it finds a reliable signal and I've driven for up to 15 miles before it finds a reliable signal. Purchased it to replace a worn out Garmin and it does not compare.

To improve your GPS satellite acquisition we recommend plugging into your PC every few days... we update with QuickGPSFix each time you connect to give the VIA a head start on searching the sky for satellites. This will also let you update the maps, which you have a lifetime subscription to for updates!

TomTom has ruined a great GPS

It will no longer automatically come on when you start the car. Here's what you have to go through: 1. fumbling for the Power Switch ([it's on the back} and holding it for 8 seconds. 2. Waiting for it to boot up (2-3 minutes) 3. Clicking on the legal warning (it's not their fault if you crash) 4. Waiting for re-acquisition of satellites 30-90 seconds. This isn't a fluke, my larger TomTom now does the same thing. I've essentially stopped using mine. Google maps is ready in 10 seconds. Still prefer dedicated GPS for trips, guess I have to find another brand after 10 years of being a loyal customer.
