    • Commentary by Director/Screenwriter Ronald F. Maxwell, Cinematographer Kees Von Oostrum, Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author James M. McPherson and Military Historian Craig Symonds

    Synopsis

    Gettysburg
The Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara becomes this sprawling historical epic. As in Shaara's novel, director Ronald Maxwell focuses on a handful of major players to dramatize the events of July 1863, when the armies of the Union and Confederacy clash at the small Pennsylvania town of the title. Among them are Martin Sheen as General Robert E. Lee, who disagrees with his top advisor, General James Longstreet (Tom Berenger) over battle strategy, and Jeff Daniels as Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, a college professor whose unorthodox techniques save the day (and possibly the war) for his beleaguered army. Other cast standouts include Richard Jordan in his final film appearance as the ill-fated General Lewis Armistead, and cameo roles for Civil War buff Ken Burns and media mogul producer Ted Turner. Filmed on-location at Gettysburg National Military Park, Gettysburg was shot as a television miniseries for Turner's TNT cable channel, but earned a limited theatrical release. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Overall, a solid Civil War historical epic solidly grounded in The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara. The film tracks on a handful of major players to dramatize the July 1863 battle between the armies of the Union and Confederacy in Gettysburg, a small Pennsylvania farm town. Martin Sheen stars as General Robert E. Lee, Tom Berenger as General James Longstreet, and Jeff Daniels as Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, a college professor whose unorthodox techniques save the day for the Union. The film is over 2 hours and 30 minutes. History and Civil War buffs should enjoy it. A nagging problem is that Civil War reenactors participated as extras, which in one respect is a nice touch. But, even knowing the composition of the Civil War armies, wears as you watch middle-aged and old overweight men in clean uniforms portray soldiers who had been fighting and marching for years.

I don't know the details of the making of this movie (if the Union decided it didn't want to spend any money on it, or...?), but this movie "IS A DISASTER!!!" With an All Star cast, a MAJOR bit of America's history and a script that could have went on FOREVER..., this was shot POORLY (a Producer can only do "just so much", then it HAS to be in the Directing). They just didn't go as far as they should have- it has a feel like "they tried to build a MASSIVE ship with just some pieces of scrap wood that was laying around" (and the "overly Southern" feel of it didn't help either- it took away from what was REALLY going on).

As much as I love history, especially the Civil War, this movie absolutely wore me out--it was way too, too, too, too, too, too, too, to, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, long and I count not remember the names of the key players as it hopped around so much. I truly enjoyed the presentation, but the length of the movie was too long for me to enjoy it! Great production, footage, but too darn long to stay focused!!!!

I'm not big on military history despite having retired about a year ago from the military. However, if I see a movie that sparks my interest, I'll check it out. I purchased this DVD pretty cheaply with a Reward Zone certificate that I had and was not disappointed. Although I'm familiar with the story of Gettysburg, it's always interesting to see things like this brought to life in a film. The acting was pretty well done and the scenes were interesting enough to make this worth watching.

This is a truly outstanding portrayal of any Civil War battle to this date. It has the human element of both sides before, during and after the battle dramatically seen, and not just a "blood and guts" glorified killing of.soldiers one finds in video games. After having studied the true historical accounts in college, I can say that this movie ranks at the highest level in historical fact and reenactment of what actually happened.

Every seen in the movie seemed as though you’re trying to grasp what’s going on. Most seens have little to no talking, it was just dry. It had potential to be a good movie, but there needs to be some kind of stimulation. My daughter is obsessed with the Civil War and is very knowledgeable. So we were excited when we bought the DVD, but greatly disappointed!

This movie is an American classic and should be seen and discussed as basic US History in school. Well acted, brutal but honest and not unnecessarily gory. A sad part of our history, but I was glad to see the scene where the north officer spoke of ending slavery and union, and the south spoke of state rights and smaller federal government. This movie is a great Segway to conversation at the jr high school level.

It does, from all vantage-points – North and South – tell the story of this most influential battle of the American Civil War that continued to rage on for almost two years after this epic 3 day battle ended on July 3, 1863. The Blu-ray edition is presented in 1080p HI-Def. and dtsHD Master Audio – it’s breathtaking!
