Civil War epic with great literary pedigree

Overall, a solid Civil War historical epic solidly grounded in The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara. The film tracks on a handful of major players to dramatize the July 1863 battle between the armies of the Union and Confederacy in Gettysburg, a small Pennsylvania farm town. Martin Sheen stars as General Robert E. Lee, Tom Berenger as General James Longstreet, and Jeff Daniels as Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, a college professor whose unorthodox techniques save the day for the Union. The film is over 2 hours and 30 minutes. History and Civil War buffs should enjoy it. A nagging problem is that Civil War reenactors participated as extras, which in one respect is a nice touch. But, even knowing the composition of the Civil War armies, wears as you watch middle-aged and old overweight men in clean uniforms portray soldiers who had been fighting and marching for years.

I don't know the details of the making of this movie (if the Union decided it didn't want to spend any money on it, or...?), but this movie "IS A DISASTER!!!" With an All Star cast, a MAJOR bit of America's history and a script that could have went on FOREVER..., this was shot POORLY (a Producer can only do "just so much", then it HAS to be in the Directing). They just didn't go as far as they should have- it has a feel like "they tried to build a MASSIVE ship with just some pieces of scrap wood that was laying around" (and the "overly Southern" feel of it didn't help either- it took away from what was REALLY going on).

I'm not big on military history despite having retired about a year ago from the military. However, if I see a movie that sparks my interest, I'll check it out. I purchased this DVD pretty cheaply with a Reward Zone certificate that I had and was not disappointed. Although I'm familiar with the story of Gettysburg, it's always interesting to see things like this brought to life in a film. The acting was pretty well done and the scenes were interesting enough to make this worth watching.

As much as I love history, especially the Civil War, this movie absolutely wore me out--it was way too, too, too, too, too, too, too, to, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, long and I count not remember the names of the key players as it hopped around so much. I truly enjoyed the presentation, but the length of the movie was too long for me to enjoy it! Great production, footage, but too darn long to stay focused!!!!

This is a truly outstanding portrayal of any Civil War battle to this date. It has the human element of both sides before, during and after the battle dramatically seen, and not just a "blood and guts" glorified killing of.soldiers one finds in video games. After having studied the true historical accounts in college, I can say that this movie ranks at the highest level in historical fact and reenactment of what actually happened.

For every American, to fully understand our history, this well done historical movie should be a Must View! It does, from all vantage-points – North and South – tell the story of this most influential battle of the American Civil War that continued to rage on for almost two years after this epic 3 day battle ended on July 3, 1863. The Blu-ray edition is presented in 1080p HI-Def. and dtsHD Master Audio – it’s breathtaking!

This movie is an American classic and should be seen and discussed as basic US History in school. Well acted, brutal but honest and not unnecessarily gory. A sad part of our history, but I was glad to see the scene where the north officer spoke of ending slavery and union, and the south spoke of state rights and smaller federal government. This movie is a great Segway to conversation at the jr high school level.

My husband and I have always been history buffs, esp WWII and the Civil War. We traveled to central Pennsylvania and the Gettysburg area as well as the Battlefield itself. Most of the movie was shot in the actual battle area so it is easy to put the movie into perspective. Great actor lineup and an excellent plot. Would recommend this movie to anyone who appreciates America and what it took to make it great.

For Civil War fans like me, I enjoyed the dramatization and re-enactment of this historic battle. We've been to the battlefield twice and stayed over night in the complex which was General Lee's HQ, toured the town, and watched some performers in the park, but there's nothing like sitting back in front of a big screen, listening to the sounds of battle and imagining you were there to witness it first hand.

Every seen in the movie seemed as though you’re trying to grasp what’s going on. Most seens have little to no talking, it was just dry. It had potential to be a good movie, but there needs to be some kind of stimulation. My daughter is obsessed with the Civil War and is very knowledgeable. So we were excited when we bought the DVD, but greatly disappointed!

80's movie epic depicting the days immediately before the Battle of Gettysburg through the end of the army of Northern Virginia's northward campaign to defeat the Union forces. Battlefield scenes are mildly graphic though accurately capture military tactics of the era. The movie does plod along in some parts though overall has more than sufficient action to keep the viewer engaged.

Great movie with excellent acting. Gettysburg will appeal to history buffs as well as those who just want to watch a good movie. More historically accurate than a lot of other war movies/ battle scenes. (Although movies like this never truly depict the horrors of war.) The movie is quite long, but it never drags. Overall, very entertaining.

I have loved this movie since I first saw it in the 1990s. My DVD copy got lost over the years, so when I saw this in the bargain bin at the College Station, TX Best Buy, I couldn't resist buying it. The film still is a marvel of movie-making.

Not a big Civil War expert but, if you've ever been to Gettysburg, it will give you a great idea of how the battle unfolded over those three days. Others may argue over the accuracy of historical details but, as it's based on an historical novel ('The Killer Angels', 1974) and not a straight history retelling, willing to not quibble.

Gettysburg is a good movie about the overall battle and the feelings of all of the generals involved. The scene with Chamberlin is an all time classic with all of the tension of the episode. You feel like you were a Union soldier. Acting was very good and you have a feel for the battle. Highly recommended.

Kind of a documentary style/reenactment style acting. Great cast, but not as deep, serious, and emotional like some of todays peices and other famous directors pieces. If you are a history and war buff, this will be interesting for you otherwise it can be long and boring if you arent.

I bought this for my uncle and he loved it. I personally cannot vouch for its content but he said it was very interesting and educational. He said he learned a lot about the Civil War that he didn't know, even though he considers himself a Civil War history buff. My uncle recommends this DVD.
