I've never owned a Kindle, but I have the Kindle app, so I can buy eBooks from Amazon and they automatically download onto the kindle app on my iPad (and iPhone - the bookmarks transfer to each). Very convenient. I definitely recommend this over the kindle since you have many more options. You can read books on the Kindle app, or the Nook app from Barnes & Noble, Apple's iBook app, or the Cloud Library app from your local public library, assuming you have a library card. (Those are free to borrow from the library, btw. You get the use of books for 21 days but can renew if you need more time, so it saves paying for books from Amazon or anywhere else.)
Plus, you have access to a zillion things that the iPad can do in general. And if you're a voracious reader like me, who craves information, you can keep Wikipedia and Google Maps open as you're reading so you can enhance your reading experience with extra info and knowledge.
You can then archive books so they don't take up memory space, but you can access them whenever you want. All of the highlighting, search capabilities, page layout, font options, etc., are within the apps. Battery life is good.

As soon as you plug it in, it automatically uploads the pics and let's you choose which to keep, and whether you want to leave originals on the chip or clear it.
