If what your asking is if the smart thermostat would activate your secondary heat source like electric, or gas when the outside temperature goes below the threshold the heat pump's sensor are set to, then answer is yes so long as you have the smart thermostat connected to wifi. The smart thermostat would not utilize the extra two wires connected to your existing thermostat and instead utilize weather information for your location on the internet to activate your auxiliary heat source.
