Yes, the unit can be used without a "C" wire. You do lose the ability to run the fan in your furnace, independently from the furnace. I believe that you can also have multiple zones, but I have not done this myself. Good luck

The C wire is to power the unit and sometimes you can use another wire inside, or in our case we had extra unused wires in our home that we used as C wire. Unit works great. Honeywell also has good customer service to help install if needed.
