You'll need a C or Common wire one way or another. Most systems will have one, but if you don't, most thermostat wire bundles have an unused wire which your HVAC Tech can use to power the thermostat. This is a fine device in my judgement,; it does however need a power source.

If you have a Gas forced air system you may be able to get around this by doing a G wire solution. A G wire solution essentially substitutes the G for the C. You will lose independent control of your fan but your thermostat will power up and work properly. We hope this helps. -Jay
