“If you switch this laptop out of windows s mode will it significantly slow it down or will it still work at a good speed? I’ve been told the smaller gig laptops should never be switched out of S mode because they will move so so slow”

Switching out of the S Mode will not affect the performance of the laptop. This laptop has the Intel i3 processor, which is an average speed processor. It is better than the laptops that have the Celeron and Pentium processors. This laptop also has 8 gigabytes of RAM to help with the multi-tasking.
