It honestly depends on what games your son plays. This is the lower end model of the Surface Pro 4. It has no fan, a mobile processor (meant for more general usage), 4 GB of RAM (most gamers want at least 8 GB), and a standard Intel HD graphics chip instead of a dedicated gaming video card. If your son plays less graphic intense games or older games, then this might be ok with graphic settings on low or standard, but if he wants to play more demanding games, then I'd go with an actual gaming laptop. Yes, an i5 or i7 would be a much better choice, but there is more to it than just the processor. Hope that helps.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. While an i7 will give him better performance overall, an i5 would also not be a bad choice for gaming on a PC in general. The main issue with the Surface Pro is that it is not a gaming machine, and does not have a powerful enough graphics card to support the latest and greatest games. You can get some basic gaming done on it (such as Minecraft or World of Warcraft), but this is not a true gaming machine and was never meant to be.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If you are looking to game on the surface pro, it is best you look elsewhere, these do not have a dedicated video card to handle intensive games, i5/i7 would be best on a desktop or a gaming laptop.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. He's pretty accurate. He needs an i5 minimum but i7 is recommended
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Depending on the type of gaming, the video processor is usually more important than the core for most modern games. This is more of a general productivity computer rather than a gaming laptop.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. At a minimum he'd need an i5, i7 preferable. more importantly he would need either a dedicated gpu (none of the surface pros have this) or a good integrated graphics (i7 surface pro has intel iris, while the i5 has the 520 i believe). For gaming I'd recommend the i7 surface pro model but he can get by with i5. Depends on the games.
