It will still operate if you discontinue voice service but if you do, your ability to go to faster service is curtailed. The cable company allows for voice service by slowing some aspects of data transfer and once that is gone gamer speeds can be achieved with a new device that handles all aspects of modem and data. Depends on you and your need.
