Q: QuestionHow to automatically show CarPlay when iPhone is connected? I've never been able to get this stereo to automatically show CarPlay once the iPhone is (wirelessly) connected. The stereo shows CarPlay and I have to tap it each time I get in the car.

• A:Answer That is because it doesn't "automatically" display. If you're viewing the main screen, swipe to the left, you will see other widgets including CarPlay. You have to drag the CarPlay widget to the bottom of your screen. If you have too many widgets displayed, you have to eliminate one to make room for the CarPlay to display. Also check the settings in your phone for CarPlay. Make certain that it is set for Auto.

Q: QuestionWill this head unit tap into the actual satellite GPS antenna on my 2009 HUMMER H3T and function off cell grid for navigation? Or does it only rely on cell phone tower triangulation and thereby fail to work off grid for navigation?

• A:Answer This unit comes with its own GPS antenna just in case your vehicle doesn’t already have one. It uses that GPS antenna input for your location/position, but the rest of the navigation and mapping functions are handled by and dependent on CarPlay or Android Auto from your phone. If you have already plotted a route on your phone via Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze, etc. while you have cell service, navigation will continue to work (because of the input from the GPS antenna) when you lose cell service. You just won’t be able to plot a new route without cell service. If you want navigation independent of CarPlay or Android Auto, then you need to be looking at other radios such as AVIC-W6600NEX, AVIC-W8600NEX, etc.
