I will answer your question because I have the same problem that you have and that is the reason I got one. Had items stolen off of my porch but couldn't prove anything because of no video. Yes motion is detected and you have the option of having far away you want the motion to detect. At first I had it set to the curb of my front yard and it detected when the trash truck came and when the drive by mail man gave me mail, so I backed off the sensor just a bit and it is fine now. It will detect if something go by in front of your house that has a loud noise once in a while but not very often, I guess the vibration of the vehicle. Had FedEx delivery a packaged and it picked up everything on my front porch and the sensor went off saying "someone was at my front door" before the rang the doorbell. Even if you go out your front door to sweep the porch off it is records what you are doing.
