Ring devices are a one-time purchase and incur no mandatory ongoing fees or contracts. We do have Ring Protect plans which allow you to access, download, and share videos. You can learn more at ring.com/protect-plans. Without this service, you'll still receive real-time video alerts on your smartphone as well as have access to Live View.

No monthly subscription is needed for the device, they do offer a cloud service for storing saved data at a monthly cost but it is not needed to run the device.

A monthly subscription is not required, per se. The device will work without it, however, you will not be able to go back and review past video events without it. A 30 day trial subscription is included with the device, after that it is $3 a month or you can prepay for the year and it will be $30 for the basic plan, which is definitely sufficient, at least for my needs.
