From what we've read, it seems that it's difficult to hear the doorbell ring if you use your existing wiring for the Ring Doorbell 2. Do we absolutely need to buy the wifi Chime or will it work using our current setup? null

We used our existing wires, the chime is loud. Depends on how far the router for WiFi is from your door.

We have an existing doorbell and we can still hear that with the ring installed. Our issue was that the existing old style doorbell was not loud enough so we got the chime to place in the living room. If your existing doorbell is loud enough, then you don’t necessarily need the chime.

We hard wired ours in. It is hard to hear the chime when it goes off to be honest. I would say we hear the chime 15% of the time in our wired system when the Ring 2 is pressed. Obviously we get alerts to our phones when there is someone outside, but we are considering purchasing the Chime to actually hear it like a regular doorbell.

One of the reasons that you would buy this device is because you want to interface that with your smart phone. When someone pushes the button on the ring doorbell, it rings on your smart phone. And if you have motion detector set up, it will ring your cell phone before the person even gets to the door and able to push the button. 

 The electric chimes are actually just redundant. And will slowly go the way up the dodo bird and carbon paper!
